Combination (two substances join into one), decomposition (one substance splits into two or more, often triggered by heat, light, or electricity), displacement (a more reactive element pushes out a less reactive one from a compound), double displacement (two compounds swap partners, usually forming a precipitate), and oxidation-reduction, where one substance gains oxygen or loses electrons while another does the opposite.
  • Two everyday applications: corrosion and rancidity. Corrosion is the slow reaction of a metal surface with oxygen, moisture, or acidic gases in the air — silver tarnishing, iron rusting. Rancidity is the oxidation of fats and oils in food, which changes their smell and taste over time. Both are oxidation in disguise, and CBSE likes to test whether students can see the connection.

Where Students Actually Lose Marks

The chapter feels easy in class and gets harder in the exam hall, mostly for three avoidable reasons:

  • Balancing carelessly. A common slip is balancing the number of molecules instead of the number of atoms, or forgetting to treat a polyatomic group like a sulphate or carbonate ion as a single unit while balancing. Writing the equation once, counting every atom on both sides, and only then finalising coefficients avoids most of this.
  • Mixing up displacement and double displacement. Displacement involves one element replacing another inside a compound; double displacement involves two compounds exchanging ions, usually producing a precipitate. Students who memorise the definitions without practising on actual reactions tend to guess under pressure — working through ten or so example reactions and naming the type out loud fixes this faster than re-reading the definitions.
  • Treating corrosion and rancidity as vocabulary instead of chemistry. CBSE's favourite question style here is applied: identify the reaction happening when a silver ornament tarnishes, or explain why food is packed with nitrogen gas instead of air. Students who only memorise the definitions of corrosion and rancidity, without connecting them back to oxidation, struggle with these HOTS-style questions even though the underlying concept is one they already know.

A Practical Way to Study This Chapter

Because the chapter is concept-heavy rather than content-heavy, rereading it a second or third time helps less than actively working through reactions. A useful rhythm for this week:

  • Write, don't just read, ten equations. Pick reactions from the textbook exercises and balance each one from scratch, including states of matter, rather than checking the answer key first.
  • Sort a mixed list of reactions by type. Take fifteen unlabelled reactions and classify each as combination, decomposition, displacement, double displacement, or redox. This is the single best way to stop confusing displacement with double displacement.
  • Explain corrosion and rancidity out loud, in your own words, using oxidation. If the explanation does not mention oxidation, it is incomplete for CBSE's purposes.
