NCERT Class 9 Maths & Social Science Part 2: August 2026 Update

If your child is in Class 9 this year, you have probably already lived through one round of new-textbook confusion, back when the CBSE curriculum for 2026-27 first moved to NCERT's new editions aligned with the National Education Policy 2020 and NCF-SE 2023. That transition is not quite finished. The last pieces still being finalised are the Part 2 books for two subjects, and their release date has already slipped once.

How Class 9 Books Ended Up Split Into Two Parts

Under the new curriculum, several Class 9 subjects are being published in two volumes instead of one: a Part 1 for the first half of the academic year and a Part 2 for the second half, timed to when schools actually reach that content. Mathematics, Science, and Social Science are all structured this way for the secondary stage. It is a deliberate choice by NCERT, not a delay by itself — the idea is to get Part 1 into classrooms in time for the April start of the session, while Part 2 is finished and released closer to when schools need it, generally around the second semester.

Where Maths and Social Science Part 2 Actually Stand

NCERT's own press communication in May 2026 stated that all Grade 9 textbooks had been published and released except the Social Science book, which it described as "in the final stages of development." By July, reporting on the rollout indicated that the picture had changed slightly: NCERT was now saying that Class 9 Mathematics and Part 2 of the Class 9 Social Science textbook were the two still awaited, with both expected to be ready by August so they would be available in time for second-semester teaching.

That is where the confirmed timeline currently sits. As of late August, independent trackers of the rollout still list both the Mathematics Part 2 (published as Ganita Manjari) and the Social Science Part 2 volume as not yet formally released, even though August is the month NCERT itself had targeted. There is no official word contradicting the August target outright — it simply has not been met yet at the time of writing. Families should treat "released by August" as the last confirmed NCERT position, not as a guarantee of a specific date, and check with their own school for the most current status.

Why This Is Not a Reason to Worry Yet

It is worth being precise about what this delay does and does not affect. Part 2 books cover second-semester content — the chapters schools teach roughly from September or October onward. Whatever your child's school has been teaching in Mathematics and Social Science since April has almost certainly come entirely from the Part 1 books, which were released on schedule. A delay in Part 2 does not put any exam or Periodic Test that covers first-semester chapters at risk, because those chapters are not in Part 2 to begin with.

The practical risk shows up later, when a school reaches the end of Part 1 and needs to move into Part 2 content without the printed book yet in hand.
