**What Is a Civilisation?**
Now students, before we learn about the Indian civilisation, we need to understand what the word "civilisation" actually means. You might have heard this word many times, but let me explain it in simple terms.
At the end of Chapter 4, we saw how the first human groups started settling down in one place, instead of moving around as hunters and gatherers. They began practising agriculture. They developed some technologies like building houses, working with metals, and making transport tools. This gradual progress eventually led to what we call "civilisation."
But what exactly is a civilisation? In general, we use this term for an advanced stage of human societies. But to be more precise, historians and archaeologists have identified certain characteristics that a society must have to be called a civilisation. Let me list them one by one, and I'll explain each one carefully.
First, there should be some form of **government and administration**. Now, why is this important? Think about it — when a village grows into a town or city, there are many people living together. Someone needs to manage the society, make rules, solve disputes, and organize various activities. That's where government and administration come in. It's like how our school has a principal, teachers, and staff to manage everything — similarly, ancient cities needed administrators too.
Second, there should be **urbanism** — this means town-planning, the growth of cities, and their management. This generally includes proper water management and a drainage system. Imagine living in a city without proper roads, without ways to get clean water, and without ways to dispose of waste water. It would be very difficult, right? The ancient civilisations understood this very well.
Third, there should be a variety of **crafts**. This includes the management of raw materials like stone or metal, and the production of finished goods like ornaments and tools. Think about all the things you use daily — a knife, a pot, a bangle, a toy. All these are crafted by skilled artisans. In a civilisation, there are many different craftspeople specializing in different jobs.
Fourth, there should be **trade** — both internal and external. Internal trade means exchanging goods within a city or region. External trade means exchanging goods with distant regions or even other parts of the world. When farmers grow more food than they need, they can exchange the extra with others. When artisans make more tools or ornaments than they need, they can trade them too. Trade helps everyone get what they need.
Fifth, there should be some form of **writing**. This is needed to keep records and to communicate. Imagine trying to remember how much grain you stored last year, or how many cows you have, or who owes you what — without writing, it would be very difficult! Writing helps societies keep track of important information.
Sixth, there should be **cultural ideas** about life and the world, expressed through art, architecture, literature, oral traditions, or social customs. Every society has its own way of thinking, its own beliefs, its own art and music. These cultural ideas make a society unique and give people a sense of identity.
Seventh, there should be **productive agriculture** — enough to feed not just the villages, but also the cities. This is the foundation of any civilisation. Without enough food, cities cannot survive. Farmers produce food, and this food feeds everyone — the rulers, the artisans, the traders, the priests, everyone.
Now students, here's an interesting question for you to think about: Which of these characteristics do you think is the most fundamental — that is, a characteristic essential to the development of all others?
Let me help you think about this. If there's no productive agriculture, there won't be enough food to feed people in cities. If there's no agriculture, there would be no surplus food to trade. Without surplus food, there would be no need for complex government to manage trade and store grain. Without surplus, there would be no specialization of crafts. And without specialization, there might be less need for writing to keep records. So, you see, productive agriculture is probably the most fundamental characteristic. It's like the root of a tree — without the root, the tree cannot grow. Does that make sense?
Now let me ask you to do a small activity. For each characteristic we just discussed, can you make a list of professions or occupations that might exist in such a society? For example, for government and administration, we might have kings, officials, tax collectors. For crafts, we might have potters, weavers, metalworkers, carpenters. Think about all the others and try to make your list. This will help you understand how complex a civilisation actually is!
Now, students, here's another important point: Civilisation began at different times in different parts of the world. In the region known as Mesopotamia — which is modern-day Iraq and Syria — civilisation began about 6,000 years ago. The ancient Egyptian civilisation followed a few centuries later. You will learn about these and a few more civilisations in a later grade. In many ways, humanity would not have reached its present stage without the enormous contributions and advances of those ancient civilisations.
But for now, we will only look at the Indian Subcontinent, and its northwest region is where our story begins.

**From Village to City**
Now students, let's travel to the northwestern part of the Indian Subcontinent. Imagine a vast plain, watered by great rivers, with fertile land suitable for farming. This is the region of Punjab — today divided between India and Pakistan — and Sindh, now in Pakistan. These plains are watered by the Indus River and its tributaries.
Now, what is a tributary? A tributary is a river that flows into a larger river or lake. For instance, the Yamuna is a tributary of the Ganga. Similarly, many smaller rivers flow into the Indus, making its basin very fertile.
A little further east, a few millennia ago, another river called the Sarasvati used to flow from the foothills of the Himalayas through Haryana, Punjab, parts of Rajasthan and Gujarat. You can imagine how green and fertile this entire region must have been!
In this whole region, from about 3500 BCE, villages grew into towns, and with increasing trade and other exchanges, those towns further grew into cities. This transition happened around 2600 BCE. So students, try to imagine — around 2600 BCE, which is more than 4,500 years ago, people in this region were building cities! Isn't that amazing?
Archaeologists gave this civilisation several names — 'Indus', 'Harappan', 'Indus-Sarasvati' or 'Sindhu-Sarasvati' civilisation. We will use all these terms in our lesson. Its inhabitants are called 'Harappans'. It is one of the oldest civilisations in the world — indeed, it is comparable to the ancient civilisations of Mesopotamia and Egypt!
Now, here's an interesting question: Why are the inhabitants of this civilisation called 'Harappans'? The answer is simple — because the city of Harappa, today in Pakistan's Punjab, was the first of this civilisation to be excavated, way back in 1920–21, over a century ago. When archaeologists first discovered this ancient city, they started calling it Harappa, and eventually, the entire civilisation was named after this city.
This development is also called the 'First Urbanisation of India'. Urbanisation means the growth of cities and urban areas. So this was the first time in Indian history that cities were built on such a large scale.
Now students, let me tell you about the map shown in your textbook. Figure 6.3 shows some of the main settlements of the Indus-Sarasvati civilisation. Notice the natural boundaries formed by the mountain ranges. The map shows the Indus River and its five main tributaries. Important cities grew along those rivers, such as Mohenjo-daro and Harappa. But there are also many sites along the Sarasvati River, which today goes by the name of 'Ghaggar' in India and 'Hakra' in Pakistan. That's why we also call it the 'Ghaggar-Hakra River'.
Now, here's a fun activity for you. Look at the table in your textbook that matches Harappan cities with modern states or regions. Let me give you the answers:
Dholavira is in Gujarat. Harappa is in Punjab (Pakistan). Kalibangan is in Rajasthan. Mohenjo-daro is in Sindh (Pakistan). And Rakhigarhi is in Haryana. Isn't it interesting to see how these ancient cities are located in regions that are still inhabited today?

**The Sarasvati River**
Now let me tell you more about the Sarasvati River, because it's very important for understanding this civilisation.
The map shows the Indus and its five main tributaries, and important cities grew along those rivers. But there are also many sites along the Sarasvati River. Today, this river goes by the name of 'Ghaggar' in India and 'Hakra' in Pakistan. This river is now seasonal, which means it flows only during the rainy season. During other times of the year, it dries up.
The Sarasvati River is first mentioned in the Rig Veda, an ancient collection of prayers which we will read about in Chapter 7. In this text, Sarasvati is worshipped both as a goddess and as a river flowing 'from the mountain to the sea'. Later texts describe the river as drying up and eventually disappearing. This is very significant because it tells us that the ancient people knew about this river and wrote about it in their sacred texts.

**Town-Planning**
Now students, let's talk about something really fascinating — how the Harappans planned their cities!
Harappa and Mohenjo-daro, now in Pakistan, were the first two cities of this civilisation to be discovered. Their identification goes back to 1924, almost a century ago. Several sites followed in the Indus plains, which is why the civilisation was initially called 'Indus Valley civilisation'.
Later on, other major cities were discovered, such as Dholavira in Gujarat, Rakhigarhi in Haryana, Ganweriwala in the Cholistan desert of Pakistan, and hundreds of smaller sites like Lothal in Gujarat. Some of these have been excavated, and discoveries continue even today! It's so exciting that archaeologists are still finding new things about this ancient civilisation.
It's interesting to note that the Sarasvati basin includes not only two major cities — Rakhigarhi and Ganweriwala — but also several smaller ones like Farmana in Haryana, Kalibangan in Rajasthan, and a few towns like Bhirrana and Banawali, both in Haryana. The map makes clear the high density of sites in that region. This shows that the Sarasvati River basin was very important for this civilisation.
Now, here's the amazing part: The larger Harappan cities were built according to precise plans. They had wide streets, which were often oriented to the cardinal directions — that means they were aligned with north, south, east, and west, just like a compass! This shows that the Harappans had great knowledge of geometry and planning.
Most cities seem to have been surrounded by fortifications. What are fortifications? They are massive walls surrounding a settlement or city, generally for protective purposes. So the Harappans built walls around their cities to protect themselves from any danger.
And here's another interesting feature: Most cities had two distinct parts — the 'upper town', where the local elite probably lived, and the 'lower town', where common people lived. The word "elite" here refers to the higher layers of the society, such as rulers, officials, administrators, and often priests. So there was some difference in where different classes of people lived, but as we'll see later, the differences were not extreme.
Some large buildings seem to have been used for collective purposes. For instance, there were warehouses where goods to be transported were stored. Individual houses of various sizes lined the streets and smaller lanes. Interestingly, the quality of construction was the same for small and big houses. This is quite remarkable! It suggests that in Harappan society, even common people lived in well-built houses. All those buildings were generally made of bricks.
Now, there's one structure that has fascinated archaeologists and visitors alike — the famous 'Great Bath' in Mohenjo-daro. This is a small but elaborate tank which measured about 12 metres by 7 metres. It had waterproofing materials, such as natural bitumen — which is a form of tar — applied on top of carefully laid-out bricks. The tank was surrounded by small rooms, one of which contained a well. There was a drain in one corner of the tank to empty it from time to time and refill it with freshwater.
What was the purpose of such a structure? Archaeologists have proposed several possible interpretations. Some think it was a public bath for people. Others think it was a bath for the royal family only. And some think it was a tank used for religious rituals. The first interpretation is now ruled out because it turns out that in this city, most houses had individual bathrooms. So why would they need a public bath if everyone had one at home?
Now, here's a question for you to think about and discuss in class: What do you think the Great Bath was used for? Can you think of any other interpretations? Remember that in this case, we do not have any other source of history — no inscription, no text, no traveller's account. We have to use our imagination and reasoning!
Let me also tell you about Dholavira, which is in Gujarat. This city had three distinct zones, not two as in other cities. Also, in this city, the foundations of most buildings were made with stones, unlike other places where bricks were used. Dholavira shows us how different cities in the same civilisation could have some unique features.

**Water Management**
Now students, this is one of the most impressive aspects of the Harappan civilisation. They gave much importance to water management and cleanliness.
They often had separate areas for bathing in their homes. These were connected to a larger network of drains, which generally ran below the streets and took the waste water away. Just imagine — more than 4,000 years ago, they had underground drainage systems! This is truly remarkable.
In Mohenjo-daro, people drew water from hundreds of wells made of bricks. But in other regions, it may have been from ponds, nearby streams, or human-made reservoirs. A reservoir is a large natural or artificial place where water is stored.
Now, here's something incredible: In Dholavira, which is in the Rann of Kutch in Gujarat, the largest reservoir measured 73 metres in length! Let me put this in perspective for you. If you measure your classroom, it's probably about 8 to 10 metres long. So this reservoir was about 7 times longer than your classroom! At Dholavira, at least six large reservoirs were built with stones or even cut into the rock. Most of them were connected through underground drains for efficient water harvesting and distribution.
Now, here's a fun activity for you. With the help of any measuring tape, measure the length of your classroom, a school corridor, or a playground. Compare these lengths with the length of the largest reservoir in Dholavira, which is 73 metres. You'll be amazed to see how big it was!
Now, here's a thinking question for you: Imagine the large number of workers required to build such a network of reservoirs. Who do you think organised their work and gave them precise instructions? How do you think they were paid for their labour? Remember, there was no money at that time in the way we have today. Since the reservoirs needed to be cleaned from time to time, was there some local authority to manage their maintenance? What clues do we get from all this about this city's ruler and municipal administration?
Think about it this way: Building such large reservoirs requires planning, organization, and coordination. Someone had to decide where to build them, how big to make them, how to connect them. Someone had to gather workers, assign them tasks, and make sure the work was done properly. This suggests that there was some form of government or authority that could organize such large projects. How were workers paid? Perhaps they were given food from the state's stores, or perhaps they were part of a system where everyone contributed labor for the community, like in some ancient societies. We don't know for certain, but these are the questions that archaeologists discuss. And as the hint says, the answers are not always final! History is full of mysteries waiting to be solved.

**What Did the Harappans Eat?**
Now students, let's talk about something we all love — food!
The Harappans created many of their settlements along the banks of large or small rivers. This is a logical choice, not just for easy access to water, but also for agriculture, since rivers enrich the soil around them with nutrients. When rivers flood, they deposit silt on the land, making it very fertile for farming.
Archaeological findings have shown that the Harappans grew cereals like barley and wheat, some millets, and sometimes rice. They also grew beans, peas, and lentils — which we call pulses in India. They grew a variety of vegetables too. They were also the first in Eurasia to grow cotton, which they used to weave into clothes. Just think about that — they were the first to grow cotton anywhere in Europe and Asia! They made farming tools, including the plough. Some of these ploughs continue to be used by modern-day farmers, which shows how effective and simple their design was.
This intense agricultural activity was managed by hundreds of small rural sites or villages. Then as now, the cities could survive only if enough agricultural produce from rural areas reached them on a daily basis. It's like how cities today depend on villages for food. Farmers grow the food, and then it's transported to cities where people buy it.
The Harappans also domesticated a number of animals for meat consumption. They fished both in rivers and in the sea. This is known from the large numbers of animal and fish bones found during excavations. So they had a varied diet that included meat and fish as well.
Now, here's something really interesting. What did Harappan cooking pots contain? Scientific examinations of clay pots have provided some answers. They found remains of dairy products, which is expected. But they also found surprising things — such as remains of turmeric, ginger, and banana. Clearly, their diet was quite diverse! They used spices just like we do today. Turmeric, ginger — these are such important parts of Indian cooking even now. It's amazing to think that our ancestors were using these same ingredients thousands of years ago!
Now, here's an activity for you: Imagine you cook a meal in a Harappan house. What dish or dishes would you prepare, based on the data given above? You could make a dal with pulses, cook some wheat or barley, add vegetables, and use turmeric and ginger for flavor. You could also have fish if you lived near a river or the sea. Try to think of a complete meal!

**A Brisk Trade**
Now students, let's talk about trade, which was another important aspect of Harappan civilisation.
The Harappans were engaged in active trade, not only within their own civilisation — with other cities nearby or far away — but also with other civilisations and cultures within and outside India. They exported ornaments, timber, some objects of daily use, probably also gold and cotton, and possibly some food items.
The most favoured ornaments were beads of carnelian. Carnelian is a reddish semi-precious stone found mostly in Gujarat. Harappan craftspeople developed special techniques to drill them, so a string could pass through them, and to decorate them in various ways. They also worked conch shells into beautiful shell bangles. This requires sophisticated techniques because shell is a hard material. Just imagine carving a hard shell into a smooth, beautiful bangle — that takes great skill!
Now, what did the Harappans import in exchange for the exported goods? This is not so clear. It probably included copper, since this metal was not so common back home. They needed copper for making tools, pots, and other objects.
Now, here's something important: The Harappans mastered the art of working copper, a soft metal. If tin is added to copper, the resulting metal is bronze, which is harder than copper. The Harappans used bronze to make tools, pots and pans, and some figurines. Bronze is an alloy — a mixture of two metals. This shows they had good knowledge of metallurgy.
To conduct such a trade, they used land routes and rivers, and the sea for more distant destinations. This is the first intensive maritime activity in India! Indeed, quite a few Harappan settlements are located in the coastal regions of Gujarat and Sindh.
Now, here's something fascinating: Lothal, a small settlement in Gujarat, has a surprisingly huge basin measuring 217 metres in length and 36 metres in width. The length is just a little more than that of two football grounds! This basin must have been a dockyard — that is, a structure used to receive and send boats for further transportation of goods. So Lothal had a port! This shows that the Harappans were trading by sea, not just by land.
Now, such elaborate trade requires traders to be able to identify their goods — and also each other! This seems to have been the chief purpose of thousands of small seals, which have been excavated from many settlements. These seals were generally made of steatite, a soft stone that would be hardened through heating. They measure only a few centimetres and generally depict animal figures with, above them, a few signs that are part of a writing system. But that system and the symbolic meaning of the animal figures are yet to be understood. What is certain is that they somehow relate to trade activities. Perhaps the seals were used to mark goods, or to identify traders, or for some other purpose we haven't figured out yet.
Now, here's an activity for you: Looking at the three Harappan seals shown in your textbook — one showing a unicorn, one showing a bull, and one showing a horned tiger — what goes through your mind? Would you like to suggest any interpretations? Let your imagination run! There are no wrong answers here. Think about what these animals might represent, what the writing signs might mean, and why these seals were important for trade.

**The Lives of the Ancients**
Now students, let's look at some of the objects that archaeologists have unearthed. These objects give us a glimpse into the daily life of the Harappans.
**Objects of daily use:** They had bronze mirrors to look at themselves. They had terracotta pots for storing water and cooking. They had stone weights for measuring things — this is very important for trade! They had bronze chisels for carving and working with wood. They had games boards engraved on stones, about 25 centimetres in length — so they played board games! They had terracotta whistles, about 4 centimetres in length — so they had toys for children. The Harappans designed many games and toys to keep both adults and children amused! Isn't that wonderful? They were just like us in many ways.
**Cultural and symbolic objects:** They had a statuette of a figure often called the 'Priest King', although it's not known who this figure actually was. They had seals showing a swastika — which is a symbol that is still used in India today, especially in religious contexts. They had seals depicting a three-faced deity seated on a raised platform, surrounded by powerful animals. This might represent a god or a spiritual belief.
They had the famous 'Dancing Girl' — a bronze figurine from Mohenjo-daro. It is 10.8 centimetres high. Look at her posture, her confidence, her jewelry! She has bangles covering an entire arm — a practice still visible in parts of Gujarat and Rajasthan today! They also had terracotta figurines seated in a 'namaste' posture — the same posture we use to greet each other in India even today! They had designs on pots which seem to tell the story of the thirsty crow, who finds a clever way to drink water at the bottom of the pot. This is a story that is still told in India!
Now, here's a thinking question: Looking at all these objects, can you make out what activities or aspects of life were important for the Harappans? They clearly cared about personal appearance — they had mirrors, jewelry, and nice clothes. They played games and had toys for children. They had religious or spiritual beliefs, as shown by the seals and figurines. They told stories, as shown by the pot with the crow story. They had a sense of aesthetics and beauty.
Now, here are two more activities for you:
First, complete the story found on the Lothal pot. How was such a story remembered for more than 4,000 years? Think about it — the story of the thirsty crow is still told in India today. How do stories survive for so long? Through oral tradition — people tell stories to their children, who tell them to their children, and so on. That's how stories are passed down through generations!
Second, consider the 'Dancing Girl' figurine. What do you make of the attitude the figurine expresses? Observe her bangles covering an entire arm, a practice still visible in parts of Gujarat and Rajasthan. Where else in this chapter can you spot bangles worn in this manner? What conclusion should we draw from this?
Looking at other figures in the chapter, you might see that many female figurines have similar arm bangles. This suggests that wearing arm bangles was a common practice among Harappan women, and it has survived in some parts of India even today. What does this tell us? It tells us that some aspects of Indian culture have been around for thousands of years! There is a continuity in our culture that is truly remarkable.

**The End or a New Beginning?**
Now students, this is a sad but important part of our story. Around 1900 BCE, this Sindhu-Sarasvati civilisation, despite all its achievements, began to fall apart. The cities were abandoned one by one. If any inhabitants remained, they adopted a rural lifestyle in the changed environment. It appears that the earlier government or administration no longer existed. Gradually, the Harappans scattered over hundreds, if not thousands, of small rural settlements.
What caused this decline? This is a question that has puzzled historians and archaeologists for a long time.
Long ago, it was thought that warfare or invasions may have destroyed the cities. But there is no trace of warfare or invasion. Indeed, the archaeologists have not found any weapons of war, no signs of battles, no evidence of violent destruction. The Harappans do not seem to have kept any army or weapons of war. As far as the evidence goes, it seems to have been a relatively peaceful civilisation. That's quite remarkable, isn't it? A civilisation without an army!
Two factors are currently agreed upon by experts. First, there was a climatic change which affected much of the world from 2200 BCE onward, causing reduced rainfall and a drier phase. This would have made agriculture more difficult and could have reduced food supply to the cities. Second, the Sarasvati River dried up in its central basin. Suddenly, cities there, such as Kalibangan or Banawali, were abandoned. There could have been other factors, but these two remind us of how much we depend on climate and the environment for our well-being.
Now, here's a thinking question for you: The Harappans returned to rural settlements because a rural lifestyle gives easier access to food and water than an urban lifestyle. Then as now, cities depended on villages to provide food, and sometimes water. What does this tell us about the relationship between cities and villages? It tells us that cities cannot survive without villages. Villages produce food, and cities consume it. If the villages cannot produce enough food, the cities will struggle. This is as true today as it was 4,000 years ago!
Although the cities disappeared, much of the Harappan culture and technology survived and was passed on to the next phase of Indian civilisation, which we will explore in a future chapter. So this was not really an end — it was a new beginning. The knowledge, skills, and traditions of the Harappans were passed down to future generations, and many aspects of their culture can still be seen in India today.
