So students, let's start by looking at a very important question. What are some key geographical features of India? And how does this geographical diversity affect our lives? These are the two big questions we will answer by the end of this chapter.
Now, let's look at the map of India. I want you to imagine you are looking at India from above, like a bird flying high in the sky. What do you see? You will notice that our country has many different kinds of landforms — mountains, plains, plateaus, deserts, and coastlines. Each of these is special in its own way. You might remember learning about different types of landforms in your earlier classes — mountains, plains, and plateaus. Can you identify these on the map? Also, have you noticed the different colours on the map? These colours tell us about the height or altitude of different places. The legend on the map shows us what each colour means. This is very useful for geographers.
India is the seventh-largest country in the world, and it is a part of Asia. Along with its neighbours — Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, and Myanmar — we form a region called the Indian Subcontinent. We call it a subcontinent because it is a large landmass that is part of a bigger continent, which is Asia. Sometimes, for the purpose of discussion, we divide India into five main regions. Can you guess what they are? They are: the great mountain zone, the plains of the Ganga and the Indus, the desert region, the southern peninsula, and the islands. In this chapter, we will fly over all these zones and see what makes each one unique.
Now, students, let me tell you about the boundaries of our country. The Himalayan Mountain range stands like a massive wall in the north. It is so tall and continuous that it acts as a natural barrier, separating India from the rest of Asia. To the west, we have the Thar Desert and the Arabian Sea. To the south, the Indian Ocean surrounds our peninsula, and to the east, the Bay of Bengal forms a natural boundary. These geographical features have played a huge role in shaping India's climate, culture, and history. Isn't it fascinating how the land itself influences how we live?
Now, let's explore each region in detail. First, let's travel to the north — to the Himalayas.
The Himalayas are perhaps the most famous mountain range in the world. If you look at the map, you will see that it stretches across the northern part of our country like a huge wall. From the legend on the map, can you guess how high these mountains are? The Himalayas are incredibly tall — many of their peaks are over 8000 metres in height! These peaks are together called the 'Eight Thousanders'. The highest mountain in the world, Mount Everest, is part of this range. Can you name it? Yes, Mount Everest stands at 8848 metres tall. The Himalayas stretch across six countries in Asia: India, Nepal, Bhutan, China, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. They truly are a marvel of nature.
Now, students, let me tell you why the Himalayas are so important. In the summer, the snow on these mountains melts and feeds major rivers like the Ganga, Indus, and Brahmaputra. These rivers and their tributaries provide water for drinking, farming, and industries. Hundreds of millions of people depend on these rivers for their survival. That is why the Himalayas are sometimes called the 'Water Tower of Asia' — they provide water to so many people, just like a water tower provides water to a city!
The Himalayas are also very important culturally and religiously. Many of these mountains are considered sacred. Temples and monasteries have been built within them. Monks and spiritual seekers from around the world come here to pray and meditate. It is truly a spiritual land.
Now, let me tell you an interesting story about how the Himalayas were formed. Are you ready for this? A long, long time ago — about 250 million years ago — India was part of a much bigger landmass called Gondwana. Can you imagine? India was connected to Africa at that time! Then, at some point, India broke away from Gondwana and slowly started moving north. It took millions of years, but about 50 million years ago, India reached the landmass of Eurasia and collided with it. What do you think happened? Just like when you push a carpet and it wrinkles, the land between India and Eurasia crumpled and rose up, forming the mighty Himalayan mountains! Isn't that amazing? And here's something even more surprising — India is still pushing into Asia today, very slowly, about five centimetres each year. This is much slower than the rate at which your hair grows. But because of this continuous push, the Himalayas are still growing taller, about five millimetres every year. Over a thousand years, that adds up to five metres! So, in a way, the mountains are still being born.
The word 'Himalaya' comes from two Sanskrit words — hima meaning 'snow', and ālaya meaning 'abode' or 'dwelling'. So, Himalaya means the 'abode of snow'. How beautiful is that name!
Now, students, the Himalayas are broadly divided into three main ranges. Let me explain each one.
The first range is called the Himadri, or the Greater Himalayas. This is the highest and most rugged part of the range. It includes towering peaks like Mount Everest and Kanchenjunga. This region remains snow-covered throughout the year. Life here is very tough, and there are not many human settlements because of the extreme conditions.
The second range is called the Himachal, or the Lower Himalayas. This lies south of the Greater Himalayas and has a more moderate climate. Because of this, there is rich biodiversity and human habitation here. Many popular hill stations are located in this region — can you name some? Yes, Nainital in Uttarakhand, Darjeeling in West Bengal, Shimla in Himachal Pradesh, and Mussoorie in Uttarakhand. Have you ever visited any of these places? They are so beautiful!
The third range is called the Shivalik Hills, or the Outer Himalayas. These are the outermost and lowest range. They consist of rolling hills and dense forests. These foothills are rich in wildlife and serve as a transition zone between the Himalayas and the Gangetic Plains, which we will learn about soon.
Now, students, I want you to do an activity. Can you locate the names of the Indian states in the different parts of the Himalayas? Use both the physical and political maps to help you. This will help you understand where different parts of the Himalayas are located within our country.
Let me tell you something interesting about house construction in the western Himalayan region. The traditional method is called 'kath-kuni' or 'dhajji-dewari' style. In this method, locally available stone and wood are used to build houses. This not only keeps the house warm in the cold winters but also helps resist damage during earthquakes. Isn't it wonderful how people adapt to their environment?
Now, let's talk about a very special place in the Himalayas — the Great Himalayan National Park in Himachal Pradesh. This park has a wide diversity of flora and fauna. It has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The biodiversity here is being preserved by the government as well as the village communities that live inside the park. This shows how humans and nature can work together to protect our planet.
Now, students, let's move westwards from the Himalayas to learn about a very different kind of region — the cold desert of Ladakh. When you hear the word 'desert', what comes to mind? Most people think of a hot, sandy place like the Thar Desert. But did you know that there are also cold deserts? And we have one right here in India! Ladakh is a cold desert where winter temperatures can drop below minus 30 degrees Celsius. That is extremely cold! There is very little rainfall here, and the landscape is rugged, with rocky terrain, deep valleys, and beautiful lakes like Pangong Tso. 'Tso' means lake in the local language. The terrain here looks so unusual that it is often called 'moonland' because it resembles the surface of the moon.
Geologists explain that this terrain was formed in a similar way to the Himalayas — when the Indian landmass collided with Eurasia, the mountains were 'folded'. This folded portion was actually part of an ocean long ago, and so the rocks in this area are made largely of sand and clay. Over millions of years, wind and rain have eroded the mountains into the shapes we see today.
Despite the harsh conditions, Ladakh is home to unique wildlife like snow leopards, ibex, and Tibetan antelopes. The people of Ladakh, called Ladakhis, lead simple lives. The region is known for its ancient monasteries and colourful festivals like Losar and the Hemis Festival. Yaks are very important for the people here — they are reared for milk, meat, wool, and dung, and are also used for transport.
Pangong Tso is a very special lake. Unlike most other lakes, its water is salty. This saltiness comes from minerals that dissolve from the surrounding mountain areas. The lake looks absolutely stunning, with its blue waters stretching to the horizon.
Now, let's travel from the cold desert of Ladakh to a completely different region — the Gangetic Plains. As we move southwards from the Himalayas, we reach these vast and fertile plains. These plains have been an important part of the history and civilisation of India. Many ancient civilizations flourished here.
The Gangetic Plains are nourished by mighty rivers that originate from the Himalayas. The Ganga, Indus, and Brahmaputra river systems, along with their many tributaries, bring water to this region. This water is a vital lifeline — it provides water for drinking, farming, and industries. The rivers bring with them minerals that enrich the soil, making the region highly fertile and ideal for agriculture. Can you imagine farming in soil that is naturally rich in minerals? This is why the plains are so good for growing crops. The rivers are also used for generating electricity, which powers our homes and industries.
A large proportion of India's population lives in these plains. This makes sense — the flat land, fertile soil, and availability of water make it easy for people to live here and grow food.
The flat land of the Northern Plains has also allowed for the development of an elaborate transportation network. Road and railway networks facilitate the movement of people and goods over long distances. You might have traveled by train across these plains — isn't it amazing how smoothly the train runs on the flat land?
Now, here's something interesting. Most rivers in India are named after goddesses — Ganga, Yamuna, Kaveri, and so on. But the name Brahmaputra is different — it means 'the son of Brahma'. Also, unlike most rivers that become smaller in summer, Brahmaputra gets bigger during summer. Can you guess why? This is because in summer, the snow in the Himalayas melts rapidly, and this water flows into the river, making it swell. That's the mystery solved!
Now, let's look at the satellite image of the Gangetic Plains. Notice the concentration of lighting in the plains. What could be the reason for this concentration? This is because a large number of people live in these plains, and many cities and towns are located here. The lights you see at night come from homes, factories, and streetlights.
The Gangetic Plains are also home to many wildlife species. There are langurs, tigers, and the unique gharial, which is a type of crocodile. The gharial can grow between 2.5 and 4.5 metres long. It is on the verge of extinction, and there are laws that prohibit harming it or hunting it. We also have the peacock, which is our national bird. Isn't the peacock beautiful?
Now, students, let's move further west on the map. What do we see? A yellowish area — this is the Thar Desert, also known as the Great Indian Desert. What do you see when you picture a desert? A vast stretch of golden dunes, rugged terrain, and a wide-open sky? Yes, that's exactly what the Thar Desert looks like.
Now, here's an interesting question for you. What is the shape of a sand dune? While mountains are made of rock and their shape is fixed, why do you think sand dunes also have a similar shape, even though they are made of sand? Sand dunes are formed when the wind shifts and shapes the sand into hill-like formations. Sometimes these dunes can rise as high as 150 metres! The wind carries sand particles and deposits them in certain places, creating these beautiful dune shapes. Unlike mountains, however, dunes can change their shape over time as the wind direction changes.
The Thar is a vast arid region. Most of it lies within India, spanning the states of Rajasthan, Gujarat, Punjab, and Haryana. The desert acts as a natural barrier due to the harsh conditions that deter human and animal movement. The temperatures are very high during the day and very cold at night. There is also a lack of access to water, which makes it difficult for people and animals to live here.
People living in the Thar have adapted their way of life to the place. Their food habits, clothing, and lifestyle are all suited to these harsh conditions. For example, people wear loose, light-coloured clothes that help them cope with the heat. They eat food that does not require much water to prepare.
Water is very scarce in the desert. Women often need to travel long distances every day to fetch water for their families. Can you imagine doing that? Because water is so precious, the traditional method for cleaning utensils is to scour them with sand until they are clean. A little water can be used for a light rinse, and that water is then reused for purposes like watering a plant. So, the next time you leave the tap running, remember the people of the Thar Desert.
Rajasthan is famous for its ingenious water conservation methods. One such method is the 'taanka' or 'kund' — special water collection systems that store rainwater, often for drinking purposes. These are underground tanks that collect rainwater during the monsoon season, and the water is used throughout the dry season. This is a wonderful example of how people adapt to their environment.
Now, let's go back to the map and trace our path from the Thar Desert towards the east. Do you see some hills there? Those are the Aravalli Hills. The Aravallis are among the oldest mountains in the world — some of them are about 2.5 billion years old! Can you imagine that? They are so old that they were formed even before there was life on Earth in the way we know it today.
The range has many peaks and ridges. Although its highest peak, Mount Abu, towers at over 1700 metres, most of its hills are between 300 and 900 metres high. Isn't it fascinating that a drive of about four and a half hours can take us from Mount Abu in the Aravallis to Jodhpur in the Thar Desert? That's like going from a mountainous region to a completely different geography in just a few hours!
Now, let's check on the map which states the Aravallis span. You should see Delhi, Rajasthan, Haryana, and Gujarat. The Aravallis play a vital role in shaping the geography and climate of northwestern India. One of their most important functions is acting as a natural barrier, preventing the Thar Desert from expanding further eastward. Without the Aravallis, the desert might have spread further into the fertile plains.
The Aravallis are also rich in minerals like marble, granite, zinc, and copper. Mining and construction activities have been carried out here for centuries. In fact, evidence from ancient mines at Zawar has shown that over eight centuries ago, Indians were the first in the world to master the delicate process of extraction of zinc. Isn't that something to be proud of?
Historic forts like Chittorgarh, Kumbhalgarh, and Ranthambore are located in the Aravalli region. These forts were built on the hills because the hilly terrain provided natural protection from enemies.
Now, students, let's move to a very important landform — the Peninsular Plateau. First, let me remind you what a plateau is. A plateau is a landform that rises up from the surrounding land and has a more or less flat surface. Some of its sides are often steep slopes. India has several plateaus, but the most important one is the triangular peninsular area in the middle and south of the country.
Now, what is a peninsula? A peninsula is a piece of land that is surrounded by water on three sides. Since this region is a peninsula, surrounded by water on all three sides by the Arabian Sea, the Bay of Bengal, and the Indian Ocean, it is called a peninsular plateau. This is also a very old land formation — it is one of the oldest landforms on Earth!
The plateau is bordered by two mountain ranges — the Western Ghats and the Eastern Ghats. The Western Ghats run along the western coast like a wall. They are taller than the Eastern Ghats and have many beautiful waterfalls flowing down their steep sides during the monsoon season. The Western Ghats have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. They are home to many rivers and have a rich biodiversity. The northern portion of the Western Ghats is also known as the Sahyadri Hills.
The Eastern Ghats are lower and broken into smaller hills along the eastern coast. Between these mountain ranges lies the Deccan Plateau, a vast area of flat highlands.
Rivers like the Godavari, Krishna, and Kaveri flow across the plateau from west to east. These rivers are important for farming and provide water to millions of people. If you look at the physical map, you will notice the direction in which these rivers flow.
This plateau is rich in minerals, forests, and fertile land, making it vital for India's economy. It tilts a little to the east, so a few of the rivers in this region flow towards the Bay of Bengal. East-flowing rivers like the Godavari, Krishna, and Mahanadi originate here, providing water for farming, industries, and hydroelectric power. There are also west-flowing rivers like the Narmada and Tapti, which drain into the Arabian Sea.
Dense forests on the plateau are home to tribal communities, including the Santhal, Gond, Baiga, Bhil, and Korku. These tribes have distinct languages, traditions, and ways of life closely connected to nature. Tribal communities are largely spread over the states of Jharkhand, West Bengal, Odisha, Assam, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Telangana, and Gujarat. If you look at the physical and political maps, you can connect these states to their location on the physical map.
Plateaus are home to many beautiful waterfalls in India because rivers flow over their uneven and rocky surfaces. These waterfalls not only attract tourists but also help in hydroelectric power generation and provide water for irrigation. The Western Ghats are particularly famous for their waterfalls and biodiversity. They are home to unique animals like the lion-tailed macaque, the king cobra, and even insectivorous plants that feed on insects!
The plateau is also rich in minerals like coal, which is an important resource for producing electricity. However, coal is a fossil fuel, and its use contributes to global warming, which is something we need to be careful about.
Now, let's talk about India's amazing coastlines. India's coastline is over 7500 kilometres long! It is dotted with beautiful beaches, rocky cliffs, and lush green forests. Some beaches have golden sand while others have black rocks. Some islands have coral reefs while others are covered in thick jungles. India's coasts are full of surprises!
Let's start with the West Coast of India. It stretches from Gujarat to Kerala, passing through Maharashtra, Goa, and Karnataka. Most rivers here originate in the Western Ghats, flow swiftly, and form estuaries. An estuary is where a river meets the sea. The coastline is shaped by alluvial deposits from short rivers and features coves, creeks, and estuaries. The Narmada and Tapti estuaries are the largest. The west coast has many important ports and cities. These have been centres of economic activity for thousands of years.
Now, let's look at the East Coast. It lies between the Eastern Ghats and the Bay of Bengal, stretching from the Ganga delta to Kanyakumari, which is the southern tip of India. It has wide plains and major river deltas, including Mahanadi, Godavari, Krishna, and Kaveri. A delta is a landform formed at the mouth of a river when it deposits sediments into a larger body of water like an ocean or a lake. Over time, these sediments build up, forming a triangular or fan-shaped area. The Godavari, Krishna, Kaveri, and Mahanadi rivers create fertile deltas, making the land ideal for farming. Important water bodies like Chilika Lake and Pulicat Lake are found here. A lagoon is a body of water separated from larger bodies of water by a natural barrier.
Now, let's talk about Indian Islands. India has two major island groups — Lakshadweep in the Arabian Sea and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in the Bay of Bengal. These islands have unique wildlife, beautiful beaches, coral reefs, and volcanoes.
Lakshadweep is an archipelago located in the Arabian Sea, close to the Malabar coast of Kerala. It is made up of 36 islands made of coral. Not all islands are inhabited by people. India controls a vast marine area here, allowing for fishing, resource exploration, and environmental protection.
The Andaman and Nicobar Islands comprise more than 500 large and small volcanic islands, divided into two distinct groups — the Andaman Islands and the Nicobar Islands. Their location is very important. They are like the outposts of India, keeping an eye on the ocean. They are home to a variety of flora and fauna. The Andaman Islands are also significant from a historical point of view — many of our freedom fighters were jailed there under the most severe conditions in a prison complex called Cellular Jail. It has been preserved to remind us of the tremendous sacrifices that our forefathers made so we could be free.
Barren Island in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands is the only active volcano in India. It sometimes erupts, sending smoke and lava into the sky! Isn't that amazing?
Now, let's travel to the eastern side of India, to the Sundarbans. This is located in the delta of the Ganga, Brahmaputra, and their tributaries. This delta has a unique combination of river, sea, and land. About half of it is located in India, and the rest is in Bangladesh. The Sundarbans is also a UNESCO Heritage site. It is home to many species, including the Royal Bengal Tiger. The Sundarbans are famous for their mangroves — trees that grow in saltwater. These mangroves are very important for the ecosystem.
Finally, let's travel to the hills of the Northeast. Can you see Garo, Khasi, and Jantia on the map? These hills are part of the Meghalaya Plateau. They are known for their lush greenery, heavy rainfall, and breathtaking waterfalls. This region experiences one of the highest rainfalls in the world, making it rich in forests, unique wildlife, and fertile land.
Mawlynnong Village in the East Khasi Hills of Meghalaya is renowned as the 'cleanest village in Asia'. It is famous for its well-maintained cleanliness, bamboo dustbins, and eco-friendly living practices. The village is also known for its living root bridges, which are created by weaving tree roots over the course of many years. These bridges showcase the craftsmanship of the tribes of the Northeast.
Now, students, before we move on to the exercises, let me summarize what we have learned. India gives its name to the subcontinent it is a part of. It has many diverse geographical features, ranging from the snowy Himalayas to the heat of the Thar Desert. The plains are watered by a large number of rivers. There is also a peninsular plateau with the Arabian Sea on the west and the Bay of Bengal in the east. These diverse geographic features have created a variety of conditions with respect to soil, flora, fauna, life, and economic opportunities, and have honed a rich culture. India is called a mini-continent because it has a great variety of geographical features within its borders. Just like a continent has different climates, landforms, and cultures, India also has mountains, deserts, plains, plateaus, coasts, and islands. Each region is different from the others in terms of climate, vegetation, animal life, and even the way people live. This diversity within one country is what makes India like a mini-continent.

Let's take the Ganga as an example. The Ganga starts from the Gangotri Glacier in the Himalayas. As it flows down the mountains, it provides water for drinking and irrigation. In the plains, it is used for irrigation in agriculture, for fishing, and for transportation. The river is also used to generate hydroelectric power. Many holy cities like Haridwar, Varanasi, and Allahabad are located on its banks, making it religiously important. At the end, it forms a delta in Bengal before meeting the Bay of Bengal. The delta is fertile and supports agriculture. Different people use the river in different ways along its journey.
Question 5: Why is the southern part of India referred to as a peninsular plateau?
The southern part of India is called a peninsular plateau because it is a plateau — a flat, elevated landform — that is surrounded by water on three sides. For example, if you live in Delhi, you could say you are in the Northern Plains, near the Aravalli Hills. If you live in Chennai, you could say you are on the East Coast, near the Eastern Ghats. Use the map to describe your location in terms of physical features.
Question 8: Food preservation techniques differ from place to place across India. They are adapted to local conditions. Do a class project. Gather different methods of preserving food. Hint: Drying vegetables when they are in season for use during the off-season.
This is a project for you to do in groups. You can interview your grandparents or neighbours to find out how they preserve food in your area. Some common methods include drying vegetables, making pickles, salting, and smoking. Each region has its own traditional methods based on the local climate and available resources. For example, in coastal areas, fish is dried and salted. In mountainous areas, people dry vegetables and fruits to use in winter. In hot and dry areas like Rajasthan, people make use of the sun to dry foods. This project will help you understand how people adapt to their environment.
Question 9: Despite having such different regions (mountains, deserts, plains, coasts), India remains one country. How do you think our geography has helped unite people?
This is a thought-provoking question. Despite the geographical diversity, India has managed to remain united as a nation. One reason is that the rivers like the Ganga, Brahmaputra, and others flow across different regions, connecting people. The mountains, though they create boundaries, have also been pilgrimage routes that bring people together. The seas have facilitated trade and cultural exchange. Even the deserts have trade routes that connect different parts of the country. Moreover, the Indian culture, with its festivals, languages, and traditions, has spread across the country, creating a sense of unity. The geography has also helped in the movement of ideas, goods, and people, which has contributed to a shared identity.

We then explored the Thar Desert and learned about how people adapt to life in the desert, including their water conservation methods. We also learned about the Aravalli Hills, which are among the oldest mountains in the world.
Next, we learned about the Peninsular Plateau, which is a triangular area in the south surrounded by water on three sides. We learned about the Western Ghats and Eastern Ghats, and the rivers that flow across the plateau.
We then explored India's coastlines, both the west coast and the east coast, and learned about deltas and estuaries. We also learned about the Indian islands — Lakshadweep and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
Finally, we learned about the Sundarbans delta and the hills of Northeast India, including the living root bridges of Meghalaya.
