NCERT Class 9 Part 2 Books: October 2026 Status Update
NCERT's Class 9 Maths Part 2 went on sale on 21 September 2026 while Social Science Part 2 is still not on NCERT's official textbook page as of 9 October. Here is the status, what each book covers, and how to study now.
📗 The wait is mostly over, but not entirely
In late August the Class 9 Part 2 books were still missing. Since then, NCERT has announced that Mathematics Part 2 (Ganita Manjari) went on sale from 21 September 2026, and that Social Science Part 2 (Understanding Society: India and Beyond) was announced for 30 September. But on 9 October, NCERT's official online textbook page still listed only Part I for Class IX Social Science. Here is the status, what each Part 2 book covers, what is still unclear, and how to study without waiting for anyone.
If you read our August update on these books, this is the sequel. Class 9 is the first year of NCERT's new NEP 2020 aligned books for the secondary stage, and the rollout has been uneven: Part 1 books arrived around the start of the session, some arrived late, and the two Part 2 books were the last to land. The delay drew public criticism, including an online petition from parents, because many schools were running their first term tests while some students did not yet have the second-half books.
Where Each Class 9 Part 2 Book Stands Right Now
Mathematics, Ganita Manjari Part 2. NCERT's own statement, reported on 22 September, said the book was printed and available for sale from 21 September 2026 through NCERT sales counters, the NCERT website and Amazon. Some third-party trackers say a free Part 2 PDF was posted on NCERT's site at the end of September, but we have not been able to confirm that on NCERT's own textbook page, so check there before relying on it.
Social Science, Understanding Society: India and Beyond Part 2. NCERT said this book would be available from 30 September 2026 through its sales counters, website and Amazon. However, when we checked NCERT's official online textbook section on 9 October 2026, selecting Class IX and Social Science showed only Understanding Society India and Beyond PART-I. So the free digital Part 2 is not yet on the official site, whatever the announcement said. Printed copies may reach sales counters and shops separately, so ask your school or local supplier, and check the official page again in the coming days.
Hindi medium. Parent groups and trackers have pointed out that the Hindi-medium edition of Part 2 was not yet visible on NCERT's website in early October. If your child studies in Hindi, ask the school what interim material is being used, and expect this gap to close later than the English edition.
Other items. One social media post cited in news coverage claimed an AI-related Class 9 book was also unpublished. NCERT has not confirmed this in the reports we found, so treat it as unverified.
What Is Inside Ganita Manjari Part 2
The Class 9 Maths book is one continuous book split into two volumes, so Part 1 covers Chapters 1 to 8 and Part 2 continues with Chapters 9 to 14:
- Chapter 9, Propositions and their Converses: how to state a mathematical claim, reverse it, and decide whether the reversed statement is still true. This is new-style reasoning content, and it rewards careful reading over memorised formulas.
- Chapter 10, How Quantities Combine: Understanding Data: working with data, averages and interpretation of information.
- Chapter 11, The World of Algorithms: step-by-step problem solving, which links Maths to the computational thinking that the new curriculum emphasises.
- Chapter 12, Quadrilaterals: properties of four-sided figures, using ideas about angles and about triangles along the way.
- Chapter 13, Two Variables, One Line: linear equations in two variables and their graphs.
- Chapter 14, Math of Space: Surface Area and Volume: area and volume of solid shapes.
One thing that surprises families used to the old book: according to the published chapter listings, there is no standalone chapter titled Lines and Angles or Triangles. Those ideas are woven into other chapters, mainly through proofs and reasoning. A student who skips geometry because "the chapter is missing" will be caught out.
What About Social Science Part 2?
The new Class 9 Social Science book is a single integrated textbook that replaces the four separate books of the old system: history, geography, political science and economics now sit inside one volume. Part 1 has nine chapters, spread across geography, history, political science and economics, with titles such as Shaping of the Earth's Surface, Democracy, Elections and The Price Puzzle. We have not been able to confirm the Part 2 chapter list from an official source, so check the contents page of the book itself once you have it rather than relying on a third-party list.
Does the Delay Change What Is Examined?
Class 9 is a school-level annual assessment, not a board exam, so each school decides its own schedule and how much of Part 2 is covered when. That is why the experience differs so much from one school to the next. Three practical points follow from this:
- Ask for the syllabus in writing. A school circular that lists chapters for the half-yearly and annual exams settles most doubts faster than any news report.
- First-term chapters were never in Part 2. Whatever your child was tested on in the September term tests came from Part 1 content, so the delay did not make those papers unfair in syllabus terms.
- The petition asked CBSE for clarity, not a change. Parents asked for confirmation that exams would test only what students had actually received. We could not find an official circular confirming that, so treat it as a request, not a policy.
How to Study Part 2 Without Wasting a Week
- Use the official PDF where it exists. For Part 1 books, and for Maths Part 2 if it appears on NCERT's textbook page for your medium, the digital edition is the same text as the printed one. For Social Science, work from Part I and your school's notes until Part 2 is officially posted.
- Start with the chapters that stand alone. Quadrilaterals, Two Variables, One Line, and Surface Area and Volume are the easiest to start on, because they build visibly on Part 1 ideas and on Class 8 Maths.
- Treat Propositions and Converses like a language chapter. Read each statement aloud, write its converse, and test it with an example. Questions here ask for a reason, not a calculation.
- Avoid old-edition guidebooks. Guides written for the previous Class 9 books follow a different chapter structure, and practising from them creates confusion later.
- Revise Part 1 alongside Part 2. The new book is deliberately interlinked, and later chapters draw on earlier ones, so a weak Part 1 foundation shows up quickly in Part 2.
Where IndiaSchool.ai Fits
IndiaSchool.ai has AI lessons and unlimited practice tests with instant evaluation for every chapter on the platform for Classes 6 to 10, with the current chapter list always visible on the syllabus explorer. Geometry-heavy chapters such as Quadrilaterals and Surface Area and Volume are easier to grasp when you can move the shapes yourself, and Play With Geometry has 360 interactive lessons, with one free to play from the homepage. When you want a chapter-only test, the custom question paper tool builds one in minutes. One subscription, at ₹500 a month or ₹5,000 a year, covers every board and subject, with a 14-day free trial that needs no card. More guides are on the blog.
The Bottom Line
As of 9 October, Class 9 Maths Part 2 has been announced as on sale, while Social Science Part 2, announced for 30 September, is still missing from NCERT's official online textbook page, with Hindi-medium editions lagging further behind. The late arrival was frustrating, but the syllabus itself is unchanged by it. Get the PDF, follow your school's written chapter list, and use the next few weeks to put Part 1 on firm ground, so that Part 2 starts from strength rather than from catch-up.
