The SSLC blueprint: where the 80 marks actually are

Each SSLC subject paper is 80 marks across 38 questions in three hours — eight 1-mark MCQs, eight 1-mark very short answers, eight 2-mark, eight 3-mark and six 4-mark questions. Social Science splits six ways, and two chapters each in Science and Maths carry the heaviest weight.

Read this as a time plan, not a list. Sixteen marks arrive as one-markers you should finish in twenty minutes; twenty-four marks sit in six long answers that need most of your remaining time. Students who lose marks in SSLC usually lose them by spending an hour on Part A.

Social Science — the six-way split

One paper, six strands, and they are nowhere near equal. History and Geography together are 48 of the 80 marks. Business Studies and Economics are 7 each — worth knowing before you spend a week on them.

The chapters worth the most

Science

  • Electricity~7
  • Light — Reflection and Refraction~7

Both are numerical chapters. Reading them does almost nothing; working twenty problems does almost everything.

Mathematics

  • Triangles~8
  • Pair of Linear Equations in Two Variables~8

Triangles carries proof-based questions, which are the most reliably scoring marks on the paper once the theorems are secure.

Chapter weights are indicative, taken from the published SSLC blueprint. KSEAB can adjust them between cycles — confirm against the official blueprint before building a revision plan on them.

SSLC blueprint — common questions

What is the SSLC blueprint?
It is the plan KSEAB uses to build the question paper: how many questions of each mark value appear, and roughly how many marks come from each chapter. Knowing it tells you where to spend your last fortnight.
Where do I download the official KSEAB blueprint?
KSEAB publishes blueprints and model papers under the Student Corner section of kseab.karnataka.gov.in. Always take the final version from there — the summary on this page is to help you plan, not to replace the official document.
Which SSLC Science chapters carry the most marks?
Electricity and Light — Reflection and Refraction, at about 7 marks each. Together they are close to a fifth of the written paper, and both are chapters where marks are won by practising numericals rather than by reading.
How is the 80-mark paper split by question type?
Eight 1-mark MCQs, eight 1-mark very short answers, eight 2-mark questions, eight 3-mark questions and six 4-mark questions — 38 questions, 80 marks, three hours.

Exam rules and marks on this page were last checked on 23 August 2026. Boards do change them. Always confirm dates and the final syllabus against kseab.karnataka.gov.in.
