What does "30% off" mean?
A shop board says 30% off. A sweater in the shop is marked ₹480.
What does 30% off mean for the sweater?
- The price is reduced by 30% of the price
- The price is reduced by ₹30
- You pay 30% of the price
Take a percentage off the price
The bar is the marked price. The red part is the discount that is taken off, and the blue part is what you pay. Choose the discount and watch both. Two items are in the tabs.
x% off takes x% of the price off
A discount of x% (x% off) means the price of the item is reduced by x% of that price.
Sweater marked ₹480, 30% off: Discount = 30% of 480 30/100 × 480 = ₹144 You pay 480 − 144 = ₹336. That is the selling price.
Another way: after taking 30% off, you pay the other 100% − 30% = 70% of the price: 70/100 × 480 = ₹336
The discount is a percentage of the marked price, so the same percentage gives different rupees on different prices: 30% off ₹480 is ₹144, but 30% off ₹250 is only ₹75.

A sweater marked ₹480 is sold for ₹360. What percentage discount was given?

- 20% off the ₹300 bag: ₹60 against ₹45 — correct. Yes! 20% of 300 = ₹60 and 30% of 150 = ₹45. The ₹300 bag is the bigger whole.
- 30% off the ₹150 bag, because 30% is more than 20%. The percentages are of different prices. Work out the rupees: 30% of 150 is ₹45, but 20% of 300 is ₹60.
- They give the same discount. Work out both: 20% of 300 = ₹60 and 30% of 150 = ₹45. They are different.
