Think

A tiny swimmer

A sperm is a very small body with a long tail.

What do you think the tail is for?

What this lesson covers

The idea

Sperms, tiny bodies of genetic material with a long tail, pass through the vas deferens to the urethra, a common passage for sperms and urine; prostate and seminal vesicle secretions ease their transport and nourish them.

What do you think the tail is for?

  • To help it move
  • To store food
  • To protect it

From testes to urethra

Sperms are made of mainly genetic material and have a long tail to move. They pass along the vas deferens to the urethra, which is also the passage for urine. On the way, glands add fluid that eases their transport and feeds them.

Which tube is a common passage for both sperms and urine?

What do the secretions of the prostate and seminal vesicles do?

What is the long tail of a sperm for?

  • The vas deferens. The vas deferens delivers sperms and then unites with a tube coming from the urinary bladder. The urethra is the common passage.
  • The urethra — correct. Yes!
  • The oviduct. The oviduct is a part of the female reproductive system.
  • Make the sperms in the testes. Sperms are formed in the testes. The glands add secretions along the path.
  • Cool the testes. The secretions are added along the vas deferens to make a fluid for the sperms.
  • Make the transport of sperms easier and provide nutrition — correct. Yes!
  • It helps the sperm move towards the female germ-cell — correct. Yes!
  • It stores genetic material. The sperm consists mainly of genetic material, while the long tail helps it move.
  • It helps the sperm take in food. The tail helps the sperm move towards the female germ-cell.
