Think

Where do they meet?

Sperms enter the vagina. The egg is in the oviduct.

Where do you think the sperm and egg can meet?

What this lesson covers

The idea

Sperms entering the vagina travel up to the oviduct, where they may fertilise the egg; the zygote divides into an embryo, which is implanted in the thickened, blood-rich lining of the uterus and develops into a foetus.

Meeting and settling

The sperms travel up to the oviduct and may fertilise the egg there. The zygote divides to make a ball of cells, the embryo. The embryo settles in the lining of the uterus, which is thick and full of blood, and grows into a foetus.

Check yourself

Where may the sperms fertilise the egg?

What does the zygote become when it starts dividing and forms a ball of cells?

Where is the embryo implanted?

  • In the vagina. The sperms enter through the vagina but travel upwards to the oviduct, where they may meet the egg.
  • In the oviduct — correct. Yes!
  • In the cervix. The sperms travel up to the oviduct, where they may encounter the egg.
  • A foetus at once. The ball of cells is the embryo. It develops organs and becomes a foetus later.
  • An egg. The egg is made in the ovary. The zygote divides to form a ball of cells, the embryo.
  • An embryo — correct. Yes!
  • In the lining of the uterus, which is thickened and rich in blood — correct. Yes!
  • In the wall of the oviduct. The book says the embryo is implanted in the lining of the uterus.
  • In the ovary. The ovary produces the eggs. The embryo is implanted in the lining of the uterus.
