NCERT: 9.1 What Are Solute, Solvent, and Solution?

Think

A sip of ORS

You make ORS by adding sugar and salt to water. Every sip tastes the same.

Why does every sip taste the same?

What this lesson covers

The idea

A uniform mixture is called a solution; when a solid dissolves in a liquid, the solid is the solute and the liquid the solvent, even if the solid is present in larger amount: Solute + Solvent → Solution.

A sip of ORS

You make ORS by adding sugar and salt to water. Every sip tastes the same.

Why does every sip taste the same?

  • The sugar and salt are spread evenly in the water
  • The sugar sinks to the bottom
  • Only the top is sweet

Make a solution

Press Next step to dissolve the sugar.

Solute + Solvent → Solution

When a solid is mixed with a liquid to form a solution, the solid is the solute and the liquid is the solvent. This is true even if there is more solid than liquid. Chashni of gulab jamun has a large amount of sugar in a small amount of water. Water is still the solvent.

A uniform mixture is a solution. The solid is the solute, the liquid is the solvent. Solute + Solvent → Solution.

Notes

Solute + Solvent → Solution. A solid dissolved in a liquid is the solute; the liquid is the solvent.

  • compound. A solution is a uniform mixture. A compound is made by chemical combination.
  • solution — correct. Yes!
  • element. A solution is a mixture.
  • water. Water is the solvent.
  • air. The solid that dissolves is the solute.
  • salt — correct. Yes!
  • water — correct. Yes!
  • sugar. Sugar is the solute.
  • the beaker. The liquid that dissolves the solid is the solvent.
  • sugar, because there is more of it. The liquid is still the solvent, even if the solid is present in larger amount.
  • water — correct. Yes!
  • neither. The water is the solvent and sugar is the solute.
