Teams of tissues
The three tissue systems of a plant.
A school has teams
A school has a security team at the gate, teachers in the classrooms, and a staff that carries messages and supplies.
In a stem, which group of tissues would be like the gate security?
What this lesson covers
The idea
Plant tissues are organised into three tissue systems: dermal (outer covering that protects and reduces water loss), ground (main body, with parenchyma, collenchyma and sclerenchyma) and vascular (xylem and phloem).
A school has teams
A school has a security team at the gate, teachers in the classrooms, and a staff that carries messages and supplies.
In a stem, which group of tissues would be like the gate security?
- The outer covering that protects
- The pipes that carry water and food
- The bulk of the stem inside
Find the three systems
Tap or choose each tissue system in the cross-section of a stem.
Three tissue systems
In a plant body, tissues do not work alone. They are organised into three tissue systems: the dermal tissue system (outer covering that protects and reduces water loss), the ground tissue system (the main body between the dermal and conducting tissues: parenchyma, collenchyma, sclerenchyma) and the vascular tissue system (conducting tissues: xylem and phloem).
Notes
Plant tissues form three tissue systems: dermal (outer covering), ground (main body) and vascular (xylem and phloem).

Which system is the outer covering of the plant?
How many tissue systems are there in a plant body?
Answer: 3 systems
3: dermal, ground and vascular.
Xylem and phloem together form the…
- Ground tissue system. That is the main body.
- Dermal tissue system — correct. Yes.
- Vascular tissue system. That is made of xylem and phloem.
- vascular tissue system — correct. Yes.
- dermal tissue system. That is the outer covering.
- ground tissue system. That includes parenchyma, collenchyma and sclerenchyma.
