Same plant or another
Self-pollination and cross-pollination.
Where does the pollen land
A pollen grain leaves an anther. It may land in one of several places.
What do you think decides what kind of pollination it is?
What this lesson covers
The idea
Transfer of pollen to the stigma of the same flower or another flower of the same plant is self-pollination; transfer to a flower of another plant of the same type is cross-pollination.
Where does the pollen land
A pollen grain leaves an anther. It may land in one of several places.
What do you think decides what kind of pollination it is?
- Whether the stigma belongs to the same plant or another plant
- The colour of the pollen
- The size of the petals
Self or cross?
Sort each case into the right kind of pollination.
Same plant, or a different one
What matters is the plant the stigma belongs to. If it is the same plant, even a different flower, it is self-pollination. If it is another plant of the same type, it is cross-pollination.
Transfer of pollen to the stigma of the same flower or another flower of the same plant is self-pollination. Transfer to a flower of another plant of the same type is cross-pollination.
Notes
Self-pollination: pollen to the same flower or another flower of the same plant. Cross-pollination: to a flower of another plant of the same type.

Which is cross-pollination?
In cross-pollination, the other plant is…
- cross-pollination. In cross-pollination the pollen goes to a flower of another plant.
- fertilisation. Fertilisation is the fusion of gametes. Pollination is the transfer of pollen.
- self-pollination — correct. Yes!
- self-pollination — correct. Yes!
- cross-pollination. Cross-pollination needs a flower of another plant. Here the plant is the same.
- budding. Budding is a method of asexual reproduction in hydra.
- Pollen is transferred to the stigma of the same flower. This is self-pollination.
- Pollen is transferred to a flower of another plant of the same type — correct. Yes!
- Pollen is transferred to another flower of the same plant. This is also self-pollination.
- a different kind of plant. Cross-pollination is the transfer of pollen to a flower of another plant of the same type.
- not needed at all. Cross-pollination is the transfer of pollen to a flower of another plant.
- of the same type — correct. Yes!
