Welcome dear students! Today we are going to learn about National Integration from Class 9 Social Science. In this chapter, we will explore the meaning of nationalism, the factors which enable unity in diversity in our country, and the factors which enable national integration. Let us begin our journey through this important topic. The word nationalism is derived from the word nation. The deciding factors of nationalism are, first, the people who think their living land is their motherland. Second, the feeling of brotherhood among the people and equal participation of people in the nation's joys and sorrows. Such people are called nationalists, and the feeling is known as nationalism. We can see this feeling among Indians since olden days, and it motivated the people to fight against foreign invaders, particularly the Britishers. The Republic Day parade that takes place on 26 January every year at the Kartavya Path in New Delhi is a visual grandeur of national integration. [CHECKPOINT]

National integration refers to that situation where all the people of the country feel they are one, although there are differences with regard to race, religion, culture, and language. Such a feeling of unity among the people is necessary to build a strong nation. India is a vast nation, and this country has people who speak various languages and dialects. According to the 8th schedule of the constitution, 22 languages have been recognised as official languages by our Constitution. A unique feature is the practice of several religions in our country, which include Hinduism, Islam, Christianity, Buddhism, Jainism, Sikhism, and Parsi. Similarly, despite different dress, food habits, and social systems, we all have a sense of oneness. Although geographically diverse, each part is politically united and governed under a single constitution. [CHECKPOINT]

In spite of all differences in various aspects, India stands on a foundation of unity. Besides all geographical, social, linguistic, cultural, political, religious, and racial variations, there are certain common aspects of the Indian lifestyle from the Himalayas to Kanyakumari. A uniform administrative system, efficient communication tools, and a modern education system have enabled Indians to nurture a feeling of oneness. Let us now examine the factors which enable unity in diversity. First is geographical unity. The Himalayan Mountain Range, the Bay of Bengal, the Indian Ocean, and the Arabian Sea separate India from the rest of the world. The singing of the national anthem by people living across these geographical boundaries signifies the unity of the nation. [CHECKPOINT]

Second is political unity. Homogeneous since time immemorial, India has achieved political unity through a single constitution, uniform laws, educational system, judicial system, and strong central government administrations. We have Indian political identification as well as universal standards in the fields of education, health, law, and connectivity. Third is religious unity. India is a multi-religious nation. There are religions like Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, Sikhism, Christianity, Islam, and Parsi. Every religion celebrates its own festivals, and people of one religion participate in the festivals of another. It creates unity. Universalism means all religions in India have equal right to practice their own religion. Fourth is linguistic unity. India is a home to many languages. Sanskrit is the root of most languages. Every state has its own language and literature, yet linguistic unity has not been affected, and people of one language respect other languages. [CHECKPOINT]

Fifth is cultural unity. Although there are different races and religions in India, cultural unity can be seen everywhere. Although the people of different parts have their own cultural diversity like different traditions, customs, costumes, food habits, and lifestyles, similarities can be seen among them. Now let us move on to the factors promoting national integration. The first factor is secularism. India is a secular country. This means that every citizen of the nation has the right to practice his or her own religion. There is interfaith harmony here, which encourages the unity of the nation. The second factor is democracy. India is a democratic nation and all citizens are equal before the law. All citizens of the state are considered equal in terms of fundamental rights and directive principles of state policy. [CHECKPOINT]

People cannot be discriminated against on the basis of different languages and cultures. From this we can understand that India has unity in diversity. The third factor is national festivals. National festivals of the country like Independence Day, Republic Day, and Gandhi Jayanti play an important role in uniting Indians. These festivals are celebrated by all Indian citizens in every part. Our festivals remind us of one nationhood as we celebrate without neglecting any language and culture. The fourth factor is our national symbols. Our national symbols are the National Emblem, National Anthem, National Flag, National Animal, National Bird, and National Flower. These are also helpful to identify us as one. This aspect also reminds us that we are all one in celebration or disaster. The national bird is the peacock. The national flower is the lotus. The national animal is the tiger. [CHECKPOINT]

The fifth factor is interdependence. The Central and the State Governments work through a common objective. One part of the nation is dependent on another part. The production of the respective sectors is complementary to the economic growth. For example, coffee grown in Karnataka, saffron grown in Jammu and Kashmir, and apples grown in Himachal Pradesh are sold all over India. Some parts of the nation are dependent on other parts. No state is completely self-sufficient. This interdependence also means that we all belong to one nation. Apart from this, there are other factors such as communication devices, mass media, natural factors, different cultures, regions, religions, and languages. But the feeling that the people of the entire nation are the same can be seen. [CHECKPOINT]
