CBSE Class 9: the new chapter list, and what actually changed
NCERT replaced the Class 9 Mathematics, Science and Social Science textbooks for 2026–27. Maths went from fifteen chapters to eight, Science is now thirteen integrated chapters, and the four Social Science books became one. This page uses the new books — many study sites still publish the old list.

If a chapter name looks wrong, it probably is not
“Orienting Yourself: The Use of Coordinates” is a real Class 9 Maths chapter now. So is “I'm Up and Down, and Round and Round”. The new NCERT books name chapters after the idea being taught rather than the topic label, which is disorienting for about a week and then makes sense. Check the contents page of your school copy against this list.

CBSE Class 9 — common questions
- Did the CBSE Class 9 books change for 2026–27?
- Yes. NCERT replaced the Class 9 Mathematics, Science and Social Science textbooks. Mathematics went from fifteen chapters to eight, Science is now thirteen integrated chapters, and the four separate Social Science books were merged into one. Chapter names and order are new.
- How many chapters are in Class 9 Maths now?
- Eight. The old book had fifteen. The content was not cut in half — it was reorganised, so a single new chapter such as "The World of Numbers" carries what used to be spread across several.
- Why does my guidebook show different Class 9 chapters?
- Because it was written for the old books. Most study sites and many printed guides still list the old chapters. If a chapter name on this page looks unfamiliar, check the front of your school textbook — the 2026–27 edition is the one this list matches.
- Does Class 9 matter if the board exam is in Class 10?
- It decides how hard Class 10 is. Almost every Class 10 chapter assumes a Class 9 foundation — trigonometry needs Class 9 geometry, Class 10 chemistry needs the atom. Students who struggle in Class 10 usually have a Class 9 gap, not a Class 10 problem.
