CBSE Class 9 English question paper — the three sections that decide your marks
The Class 9 English paper has three sections: Reading, Writing and Grammar, and Literature. Literature carries the most marks, but Reading is the section that cannot be revised for by memorising — and it is where prepared students quietly pull ahead. The reader is new for 2026–27.

How the paper divides
Schools set the Class 9 paper on the CBSE pattern, so section weights can vary slightly. The shape below is the standard one — confirm the exact marks with your school's blueprint before the annual exam.

Where students actually lose marks
Treating Reading as unpreparable
It is preparable — just not by revision. Read one unfamiliar passage a week and answer the questions under time. Inference questions in particular reward practice more than talent.
Writing without a format
Letters, notices and paragraphs carry format marks. Losing them is the most avoidable loss on the entire paper, and it happens because format feels too obvious to practise.
Retelling the story in Literature
A literature answer that summarises the plot answers a question nobody asked. State the point, support it from the text, stop.
Ignoring the internal assessment
Listening and speaking are assessed by your school. They are marks on your record that need almost no revision — and are lost by simply not turning up prepared.
