Sharing the Pizza: x/4
When we divide a variable by a number, we write it as a fraction.
Equation
y = x / 2

What this lesson covers
What you do
You shape the function y = x / k and watch the graph answer.
Challenges to clear
- Slide the divisor k to 4 — sharing among 4 people. Then find the x in the table where y is exactly 5: that x solves x/4 = 5.
- Still with k = 4: check that a total of 12 gives each person 3.
- This time 6 sweets are set aside for the teacher before any sharing happens. Slide c to 6.
- Now share what is left. Slide k until a bag of 30 gives each child 4 — that is 24 shared out, not 30.
Check yourself
In the equation x/4 = 5, what does the number 5 represent in the context of sharing a total amount x among 4 people?
If you change the equation to x/6 = 7, how would you find the value of x using the inverse operation?
- The total amount x
- The number of people sharing
- The amount each person receives — correct
- The remainder left over
- Subtract 6 from 7
- Divide 7 by 6
- Multiply 7 by 6 — correct
- Add 6 to 7
Think about it
- y = x/k means a total of x shared among k people. If k = 4 and x = 20, how much does each person get? Check the table.
