What this lesson covers

Challenges to clear

  • Match every organelle.
  • Connect the organelle that organises the spindle when a cell divides.

The task

Match each organelle to its function.

What this lesson covers

  • Mitochondrion — Releases energy from food and stores it as ATP (The powerhouse. More numerous in cells that work hard, such as muscle.)
  • Ribosome — Site of protein synthesis (Found free in the cytoplasm and studded on rough ER.)
  • Endoplasmic reticulum — A network of channels transporting materials through the cell (Rough ER carries ribosomes; smooth ER makes lipids.)
  • Golgi apparatus — Packages and despatches secretions (Well developed in gland cells, which secrete a great deal.)
  • Lysosome — Digests worn-out parts and foreign matter (The suicide bag — its enzymes can digest the cell itself.)
  • Chloroplast — Traps light energy and makes food (A plastid, so found only in plant cells.)
  • Vacuole — Stores cell sap and keeps the plant cell turgid (Large and central in plants; small or absent in animals.)
  • Centrosome — Organises the spindle during cell division (Animal cells only — a favourite exam contrast.)

Hint

Two of these are the plant/animal giveaways: chloroplast and a large vacuole mean plant; a centrosome means animal.
