Abscisic acid is the brake in a set of accelerators. Wherever auxin, gibberellin or cytokinin says grow, ABA tends to say stop — which is exactly what a plant under stress needs.
What this lesson covers
Challenges to clear
- Match every hormone.
- Connect the hormone that shuts the stomata when water runs short.
The task
Match each hormone to what it does.
What this lesson covers
- Promotes cell division — Cytokinin (Auxin makes cells longer; cytokinin makes them more numerous. The two work together in growth.)
- Delays the ageing and yellowing of leaves — Cytokinin — anti-ageing effect (Used to keep cut flowers and green vegetables fresh.)
- Ripens fruit — and is a gas — Ethylene (The only gaseous plant hormone. One ripe fruit hastens the ripening of those around it, which is why a ripe banana ripens the whole bunch.)
- Used commercially to ripen mangoes and bananas after picking — Ethylene — artificial ripening (Fruit can be picked and transported unripe, then ripened on arrival.)
- Closes the stomata when the plant is short of water — Abscisic acid — the stress hormone (It shuts down water loss during drought.)
- Promotes dormancy in seeds and buds — Abscisic acid — dormancy (The direct opposite of gibberellin, which breaks dormancy.)
- Promotes the falling of leaves, flowers and fruits — Abscisic acid — abscission (The name comes from this: abscission means shedding.)
Hint
Abscisic acid is the brake in a set of accelerators. Wherever auxin, gibberellin or cytokinin says grow, ABA tends to say stop — which is exactly what a plant under stress needs.
