Starch, glycogen and cellulose are all made of glucose units. Only the way they are joined differs — and that is why we can digest two of them and not the third.

What this lesson covers

Challenges to clear

  • Match every carbohydrate.
  • Connect the carbohydrate humans cannot digest to the reason it is still in your diet.

The task

Match each carbohydrate to what it is.

What this lesson covers

  • Glucose — A monosaccharide — the form the body actually uses (All other carbohydrates must be broken down to this before absorption.)
  • Sucrose — A disaccharide — ordinary table sugar (Glucose and fructose joined together.)
  • Lactose — The sugar found in milk (Digested by the enzyme lactase, which some adults lose.)
  • Starch — A polysaccharide — how plants store carbohydrate (The main source of energy in most human diets.)
  • Glycogen — How animals store carbohydrate, in liver and muscle (Sometimes called animal starch.)
  • Cellulose — Roughage — humans cannot digest it, but it keeps the gut moving (We lack the enzyme to break it down, which is exactly why it is useful.)

Hint

Starch, glycogen and cellulose are all made of glucose units. Only the way they are joined differs — and that is why we can digest two of them and not the third.
