Group them by system: A for the eye, C for connective tissue, D and calcium for bone, K and iron for blood, iodine for the thyroid.
What this lesson covers
Challenges to clear
- Match every nutrient to its deficiency disease.
- Connect the vitamin whose lack stops blood from clotting.
The task
Match each nutrient to the disease its absence causes.
What this lesson covers
- Vitamin A — Night blindness and dry, rough skin (Needed to make rhodopsin, the pigment that lets the eye see in dim light.)
- Vitamin B₁ (thiamine) — Beri-beri — weak muscles and nerve damage (Common where polished rice replaced whole grain.)
- Vitamin C — Scurvy — bleeding gums and slow wound healing (Needed to make collagen, which holds tissues together.)
- Vitamin D — Rickets in children and soft bones in adults (Without it calcium is not absorbed, so bones stay soft and bend.)
- Vitamin K — Blood fails to clot properly (Needed to make the clotting factor prothrombin.)
- Iron — Anaemia — tiredness, breathlessness and pallor (Iron is at the centre of haemoglobin; without it, less oxygen is carried.)
- Iodine — Goitre — a visible swelling of the thyroid in the neck (The gland enlarges trying to make thyroxine without enough iodine.)
- Calcium — Weak bones and teeth, and poor blood clotting (It is both a structural mineral and a regulator.)
Hint
Group them by system: A for the eye, C for connective tissue, D and calcium for bone, K and iron for blood, iodine for the thyroid.
