Lesson 1 ·Class 9 · Nutrition · Sort Lab
Why We Need Food
Three jobs, done by different nutrients.
Sort each nutrient by the main job it does in the body.
Sorted 0/8
All items sorted — check each bin.
Free play — sort every item into the bin it belongs in; each correct drop tells you why. Switch to when you're ready to test yourself.
Only carbohydrate and fat are true fuels. Protein can be burned for energy, but that is not its job.
What this lesson covers
Challenges to clear
- Fill the Energy-giving bin correctly.
- Sort every nutrient.
- Fill the Protective & regulating box — the foods needed in tiny amounts.
The task
Sort each nutrient by the main job it does in the body.
What this lesson covers
- Energy-giving: Carbohydrates (The body's first choice of fuel — about 17 kJ per gram.); Fats (More than twice the energy of carbohydrate per gram, so they are the store.)
- Body-building: Proteins (Used for growth and for repairing worn-out tissue.); Calcium and phosphorus (They build bone and teeth, so they are structural as well as regulatory.)
- Protective & regulating: Vitamins (Needed in tiny amounts to keep processes working; their absence causes deficiency disease.); Iron and iodine (Iron for haemoglobin, iodine for thyroxine — regulators, not fuel.); Water (The medium for every reaction, and the body's transport and cooling system.); Roughage (It gives no nutrients at all, but keeps the gut moving and prevents constipation.)
Hint
Only carbohydrate and fat are true fuels. Protein can be burned for energy, but that is not its job.
