Lesson 5 ·Class 9 · Digestive System · Flow Lab

Bile and Pancreatic Juice

Three juices meet in the duodenum.

Acidic chyme arrives in the duodenum. Three secretions go to work on it.

🥣 Step 1 of 6 · Acidic chyme arrives

The chyme entering from the stomach is strongly acidic — pancreatic enzymes cannot work in acid.

Free play — step through the process at your own pace, and move the slider to see what changes. Switch to when you're ready to test yourself.

Bile contains no enzymes at all. It neutralises acid and emulsifies fat so lipase can do the actual digesting.

What this lesson covers

Challenges to clear

  • Advance to the step that is physical rather than chemical.
  • Reach the enzyme that digests fat.
  • Step through all three juices at work.

The task

Acidic chyme arrives in the duodenum. Three secretions go to work on it.

What this lesson covers

  • Acidic chyme arrives — The chyme entering from the stomach is strongly acidic — pancreatic enzymes cannot work in acid.
  • Bile neutralises — Bile from the liver, stored in the gall bladder, is alkaline. It neutralises the acid and makes the medium alkaline.
  • Bile emulsifies fat — Bile salts break large fat globules into tiny droplets. This is physical, not chemical — no enzyme is involved.
  • Trypsin on proteins — Pancreatic trypsin continues protein digestion, turning peptones into peptides.
  • Amylase on starch — Pancreatic amylase converts remaining starch into maltose.
  • Lipase on fat — Now that fat is emulsified, lipase can reach it and break it into fatty acids and glycerol.

Hint

Bile contains no enzymes at all. It neutralises acid and emulsifies fat so lipase can do the actual digesting.
