Trace each food type along the canal: starch is worked on in three places, protein in three, fat in only one.
What this lesson covers
Challenges to clear
- Match every enzyme.
- Connect the stomach enzyme that curdles milk rather than digesting it.
The task
Match each enzyme to what it does and where.
What this lesson covers
- Salivary amylase (ptyalin) — In the mouth: starch → maltose (The only digestion that happens in the mouth.)
- Pepsin — In the stomach: proteins → peptones (Works only in the acid medium made by HCl.)
- Rennin — In the stomach: curdles milk protein (Important in infants, in whom milk is the whole diet.)
- Trypsin — In the duodenum: peptones → peptides (From pancreatic juice; needs an alkaline medium.)
- Pancreatic amylase — In the duodenum: remaining starch → maltose (Finishes what salivary amylase began.)
- Lipase — In the duodenum: emulsified fat → fatty acids and glycerol (Can only work after bile has emulsified the fat.)
- Erepsin — In the ileum: peptides → amino acids (The final step of protein digestion.)
- Maltase — In the ileum: maltose → glucose (The last step before sugar can be absorbed.)
Hint
Trace each food type along the canal: starch is worked on in three places, protein in three, fat in only one.
