Lesson 1 ·Class 9 · Skeleton — Movement and Locomotion · Sort Lab

What the Skeleton Does

Five jobs, not just one.

Sort each example by which function of the skeleton it illustrates.

Sorted 0/9
All items sorted — check each bin.

Free play — sort every item into the bin it belongs in; each correct drop tells you why. Switch to when you're ready to test yourself.

The two most often forgotten functions are the ones that happen inside the bone: making blood and storing minerals.

What this lesson covers

Challenges to clear

  • Fill the Protection bin correctly.
  • Sort every example.
  • Fill the Production & storage box — what the skeleton does out of sight.

The task

Sort each example by which function of the skeleton it illustrates.

What this lesson covers

  • Support & shape: The vertebral column holds the body upright (Without a rigid framework the body would collapse.); The skeleton gives the body its definite shape (Which is why bodies of the same species have the same proportions.)
  • Protection: The skull encloses the brain (A rigid box around the most delicate organ.); The rib cage surrounds the heart and lungs (It also moves, which lets it help with breathing.); The vertebral column encloses the spinal cord (A canal running the length of the backbone.)
  • Movement: Bones act as levers for muscles to pull on (Muscle alone could not produce useful movement without a rigid lever.); Joints allow bones to move against one another (The kind of joint decides the kind of movement possible.)
  • Production & storage: Red bone marrow makes blood cells (Red and white cells and platelets are all made inside bone.); Bones store calcium and phosphorus (A reserve the body can draw on when blood calcium falls.)

Hint

The two most often forgotten functions are the ones that happen inside the bone: making blood and storing minerals.
