Anopheles for malaria, Aedes for dengue, Culex for filaria. Control works at three points: breeding site, larva, or bite.
What this lesson covers
Challenges to clear
- Match every item.
- Connect filariasis to the mosquito that carries it.
The task
Match each mosquito or measure to the fact about it.
What this lesson covers
- Female Anopheles — Transmits malaria (Only the female bites — the male feeds on plant juices.)
- Aedes aegypti — Transmits dengue, chikungunya and yellow fever (Recognisable by its black and white striped legs; it bites by day.)
- Culex — Transmits filariasis, or elephantiasis (The worm blocks lymph vessels, causing gross swelling of the limbs.)
- Removing stagnant water — Destroys the breeding sites, since larvae develop only in still water (The single most effective control measure — no water, no mosquitoes.)
- Spraying oil on standing water — Suffocates the larvae, which must reach the surface to breathe (The film blocks their breathing siphons.)
- Introducing Gambusia fish — Biological control — the fish eat mosquito larvae (No chemicals, and the effect is lasting.)
- Mosquito nets and repellents — Prevent the bite itself, breaking transmission at the last step (Especially important where Anopheles bites at night.)
Hint
Anopheles for malaria, Aedes for dengue, Culex for filaria. Control works at three points: breeding site, larva, or bite.
