All of these travel the faecal-oral route, so all are prevented the same way: safe water, safe sanitation, clean hands.
What this lesson covers
Challenges to clear
- Match every disease.
- Connect ORS to what it actually replaces — it is not a cure.
The task
Match each disease to how it presents.
What this lesson covers
- Cholera — Violent watery 'rice-water' stools; death comes from dehydration (Caused by Vibrio cholerae. Oral rehydration solution is the immediate life-saver.)
- Amoebic dysentery — Stools with blood and mucus; caused by a protozoan (Entamoeba histolytica, spread as cysts in contaminated water.)
- Bacillary dysentery — Similar bloody stools, but caused by a bacterium (Shigella. The symptoms overlap, so laboratory diagnosis matters.)
- Typhoid — Steadily rising fever over days, with abdominal pain (Salmonella typhi. Carriers can spread it without being ill themselves.)
- Hepatitis A — Jaundice — yellow eyes and skin — as the liver is inflamed (A virus spread by the same faecal-oral route.)
- Giardiasis — Prolonged loose, greasy stools and poor absorption of food (Giardia cysts survive in water and resist ordinary chlorination.)
- Oral rehydration solution — Replaces the water and salts lost, preventing death from dehydration (In cholera and severe diarrhoea, dehydration kills long before the germ does.)
Hint
All of these travel the faecal-oral route, so all are prevented the same way: safe water, safe sanitation, clean hands.
