What this lesson covers

Challenges to clear

  • Match every one.
  • Connect the worm that gets in through the skin of bare feet.

The task

Match each worm disease to how it is caught and what it does.

What this lesson covers

  • Ascariasis — Roundworm eggs swallowed with contaminated food; worms live in the intestine (Causes abdominal pain and malnutrition; a heavy load can block the gut.)
  • Taeniasis — Tapeworm larvae eaten in undercooked pork or beef (The worm attaches to the intestinal wall by its hooks and suckers and absorbs digested food.)
  • Filariasis — Worms injected by a Culex mosquito; they block lymph vessels (The blocked lymph causes gross swelling of the legs — elephantiasis.)
  • Hookworm infection — Larvae in soil bore through the skin of bare feet (They reach the intestine and suck blood, causing severe anaemia.)
  • Enterobiasis — Pinworm eggs swallowed; causes intense itching around the anus at night (Scratching carries eggs to the fingers and nails, so re-infection is easy.)
  • Preventing all of them — Safe sanitation, washed food, cooked meat, footwear and clean hands (Nearly every helminth enters by mouth or through the skin of the feet.)
