Match each fact to what it describes.
What this lesson covers
- Henri Dunant — Founded the Red Cross after seeing the wounded left untended at Solferino (He proposed neutral volunteers to care for the wounded of every side.)
- The red cross emblem — The Swiss flag with its colours reversed, honouring Dunant's country (The Red Crescent is used in many Muslim countries for the same purpose.)
- Neutrality — Helping the wounded of all sides without taking part in the conflict (This is what allows it to work in a war zone at all.)
- Blood banks — Collecting, testing, storing and supplying blood (One of its most visible activities in peacetime India.)
- Disaster relief — Food, shelter, medical aid and tracing after floods and earthquakes (Its volunteer network can be mobilised very quickly.)
- First-aid training — Teaching ordinary people to give immediate help before a doctor arrives (It builds capacity in the community rather than only responding to crises.)
- The Indian Red Cross Society — Established in 1920, with branches across the states (It runs blood banks, ambulances and maternal and child health services.)
Hint
Neutrality is the whole idea — it is what lets the organisation reach people no one else can.
