- Connect the WHO''s single greatest achievement to what it was.
The task
Match each fact about the WHO.
What this lesson covers
- Founded in 1948 — A specialised agency of the United Nations, based in Geneva (World Health Day is marked on 7 April, its founding date.)
- The WHO definition of health — Complete physical, mental and social well-being, not merely absence of disease (A deliberately broad definition — mental and social health count too.)
- Smallpox eradication — Its greatest achievement — the disease was declared eradicated in 1980 (The only human disease ever wiped out completely, through worldwide vaccination.)
- Setting international standards — Standards for drugs, vaccines and the naming of diseases (So that a diagnosis or a drug means the same thing everywhere.)
- Epidemic intelligence — Monitoring outbreaks worldwide and alerting member countries (Disease crosses borders, so surveillance has to as well.)
- Technical assistance — Training health workers and helping countries build health services (Particularly in countries with limited resources.)
- Health statistics — Collecting and publishing comparable health data from around the world (Without shared data, no country can judge how it is doing.)
Hint
