Separate the ones that REMOVE pollutants from the one that merely spreads them out. A tall chimney removes nothing.
What this lesson covers
Challenges to clear
- Match every device.
- Connect tall chimneys to the honest truth about what they do.
The task
Match each device or method to what it does.
What this lesson covers
- Incinerator — Burns waste at high temperature, greatly reducing its volume (Useful for hospital and hazardous waste, but it produces ash and flue gases needing treatment.)
- Scrubber — Passes waste gas through a liquid spray that dissolves out harmful gases (Effective against sulphur dioxide and acidic gases.)
- Electrostatic precipitator — Charges dust particles electrically so they are attracted to collecting plates (Removes over 99% of fly ash from power-station chimneys.)
- Bag filter — Traps solid particles as gas passes through a fabric sleeve (Simple and effective for dry dust.)
- Tall chimneys — Disperse pollutants higher up — but do not remove any of them (An old approach that dilutes the problem rather than solving it.)
- Catalytic converter — Converts harmful vehicle exhaust gases into less harmful ones (Which is why unleaded petrol is required — lead destroys the catalyst.)
Hint
Separate the ones that REMOVE pollutants from the one that merely spreads them out. A tall chimney removes nothing.
