Three things a plant cell has that an animal cell does not: wall, plastids, large vacuole. One thing the animal cell has: centrosome.
What this lesson covers
Challenges to clear
- Place every feature.
- Fill the Animal cell column — what an animal cell has that a plant cell lacks.
The task
Each feature belongs to one kind of cell. Which?
What this lesson covers
- Plant cell: Has a rigid cellulose wall outside the membrane (Which is why plant cells hold a fixed shape.); One large central vacuole (It pushes the cytoplasm and nucleus to the edge.); Contains plastids (Chloroplasts, chromoplasts and leucoplasts.); Nucleus pushed to one side by the vacuole (A direct consequence of the large central vacuole.); Stores food as starch (Plants store carbohydrate as starch grains.)
- Animal cell: Shape is usually irregular and can change (Only a flexible membrane holds it in.); Vacuoles small, many, or absent (No need for a big store of cell sap.); Contains a centrosome (It organises the spindle in cell division.); Nucleus usually near the centre (Nothing large displaces it.); Stores food as glycogen (Animals use glycogen, mainly in liver and muscle.)
