Free play — sort every item into the bin it belongs in; each correct drop tells you why. Switch to when you're ready to test yourself.
Staminate = stamens = male. Pistillate = pistil = female. Unisexual flowers guarantee cross-pollination.
What this lesson covers

The task
Sort each flower or description by its sexuality.
What this lesson covers
- Bisexual — Both whorls present: Has both androecium and gynoecium (Also called a perfect or hermaphrodite flower.); Hibiscus, mustard and pea flowers (Most flowering plants are bisexual.); Self-pollination is possible in it (Both gametes are present in the same flower.)
- Staminate — Male only: Has stamens but no carpels (It can donate pollen but cannot set seed.); The tassel at the top of a maize plant (Maize keeps its male and female flowers in separate places.)
- Pistillate — Female only: Has carpels but no stamens (It can set seed but must receive pollen from elsewhere.); The silky cob lower down the maize plant (Each silk thread is a style leading to one ovule.); Papaya flowers on a female tree (Papaya is dioecious — male and female flowers are on different plants.)
Hint
Staminate = stamens = male. Pistillate = pistil = female. Unisexual flowers guarantee cross-pollination.
