Lesson 13 ·Class 9 · Five Kingdom Classification · Sort Lab
Phylum Arthropoda
The four classes of the largest phylum.
Count the legs and the body divisions, then sort each animal or feature.
Sorted 0/8
All items sorted — check each bin.
Free play — sort every item into the bin it belongs in; each correct drop tells you why. Switch to when you're ready to test yourself.
Count the legs: 6 insect, 8 arachnid, 10 crustacean, many myriapod. It settles nearly every case.
What this lesson covers
What you do
- Arthropods must moult to grow, because the exoskeleton cannot stretch. Every class here does it.
Challenges to clear
- Fill the Arachnida bin correctly.
- Sort every item.
- Fill the Crustacea box — the arthropods with two pairs of antennae.
The task
Count the legs and the body divisions, then sort each animal or feature.
What this lesson covers
- Insecta — 6 legs, 3 body parts: Three pairs of legs and a body in head, thorax and abdomen (The defining count — and usually two pairs of wings as well.); Cockroach, butterfly and mosquito (The largest class in the largest phylum.)
- Arachnida — 8 legs, 2 body parts: Four pairs of legs and a body in two parts (Cephalothorax and abdomen; no antennae and no wings.); Spider, scorpion and mite (Note that a spider is not an insect — the leg count settles it.)
- Crustacea — 10 legs, hard shell: Five pairs of legs, two pairs of antennae, a hard calcareous shell (Mostly aquatic, and they breathe through gills.); Prawn, crab and Cyclops (Crusta means shell.)
- Myriapoda — Many legs, many segments: Long body of many similar segments, each bearing legs (Myriad = countless. Head plus a long trunk, with no thorax or abdomen.); Centipede and millipede (Centipedes have one pair of legs per segment, millipedes two.)
Hint
Count the legs: 6 insect, 8 arachnid, 10 crustacean, many myriapod. It settles nearly every case.
