Lesson 7 ·Class 9 · Five Kingdom Classification · Sort Lab
Plants vs Animals
The differences that actually define them.
Sort each feature into the kingdom it belongs to.
Sorted 0/10
All items sorted — check each bin.
VS
Free play — sort every item into the bin it belongs in; each correct drop tells you why. Switch to when you're ready to test yourself.
Almost every difference flows from one thing: plants make their own food and so need not move; animals must find food and so must.
What this lesson covers
What you do
- Test the rule — a coral does not move and a Venus flytrap catches insects. Which criterion still decides each case correctly?
Challenges to clear
- Sort every feature.
- Fill the Animals column — the features no plant has.
The task
Sort each feature into the kingdom it belongs to.
What this lesson covers
- Plants: Makes its own food by photosynthesis (Autotrophic nutrition — the fundamental difference.); Cells have a rigid cellulose wall (Which is why the body is rigid and cannot move about.); Fixed in one place for life (Food comes from sunlight, which arrives wherever it is.); Grows throughout life, from growing points (Growth is localised at meristems and never really stops.); No nervous system; responds slowly (Responses are chemical and take hours or days.)
- Animals: Must take in ready-made food (Heterotrophic nutrition.); Cells have only a membrane, no wall (Flexibility is what allows movement.); Moves from place to place in search of food (Food must be found, so mobility is essential.); Grows all over the body and stops at maturity (Growth is diffuse and definite.); Has a nervous system; responds within moments (Rapid response is needed by something that must catch food or escape.)
Hint
Almost every difference flows from one thing: plants make their own food and so need not move; animals must find food and so must.
