What this lesson covers

Challenges to clear

  • Match every term.
  • Connect species to its definition — the fertile-offspring test is the whole point.

The task

Match each term to what it means.

What this lesson covers

  • Species — A group of similar organisms that can interbreed and produce fertile offspring (Fertile is the key word — a horse and a donkey interbreed, but the mule is sterile.)
  • Genus — A group of closely related species (Panthera contains the lion, tiger and leopard.)
  • Taxonomy — Identifying, naming and classifying organisms (Taxis = arrangement, nomos = law.)
  • Systematics — Classification based on evolutionary relationships (It asks not just how alike organisms are, but how closely related.)
  • Taxon — Any group at any rank in the classification (Mammalia is a taxon; so is Panthera.)
  • Hierarchy — Ranks arranged one inside another, from broad to narrow (Each level contains all the levels below it.)

Hint

The species definition turns on FERTILE offspring — that is what keeps species separate in nature.
