Haber's Process Simulator
Order the steps that make ammonia at scale.
Setting up the bench…
What this lesson covers
Why it matters
Pull nitrogen from the air, hydrogen from natural gas, and squeeze them together — and you can feed the world with ammonia.
Predict first
Which catalyst speeds up the Haber process?
Haber process: N₂ + 3H₂ ⇌ 2NH₃, run at about 200 atm and 450°C over an iron catalyst. The ammonia is condensed out and the unreacted gases are recycled.
- Iron — correct
- Platinum
- Nickel
What you do
Put the stages of the Haber process in order.
Check yourself
The Haber process uses high pressure because…
High pressure favours the side with fewer gas molecules — the ammonia side.
Why are the unreacted gases recycled?
Only part converts each pass, so leftover N₂ and H₂ are sent back through.
- it pushes the equilibrium toward more ammonia — correct
- it cools the reaction down
- low pressure would make it explode
- The reaction is reversible and never fully completes in one pass — correct
- The gases are too poisonous to release
- To cool the iron catalyst
