Solid, Liquid, or Gas?
Sort everyday things by their state of matter.
Setting up the bench…
What this lesson covers
Why it matters
Iron stays a hard block, water flows and takes any shape, and the air spreads everywhere. Everything around you is a solid, a liquid or a gas.
Predict first
What is the SAME about a solid, a liquid and a gas?
Solids have a fixed shape and volume. Liquids flow and take the shape of their container but keep their volume. Gases spread to fill any container. All three are matter.
- All three are matter — they have mass and take up space — correct
- All three keep a fixed shape
- All three flow easily
What you do
Sort each everyday thing by its state at room temperature.
Check yourself
A liquid differs from a solid because it…
Liquids flow to fit the container's shape, but their volume stays the same.
Ice is which state of matter?
Ice is solid water — it has a fixed shape and volume.
- takes the shape of its container but keeps its volume — correct
- has no mass at all
- fills the whole container like a gas
- Solid — correct
- Liquid
- Gas
