Recognition of Solids
64. The Solid Box · Length, breadth, and height come together
The object always remains a solid with length, breadth, and height.
A solid is a 3D object with length, breadth, and height (three dimensions). Solids occupy space and have volume, unlike 2D shapes which only have area. Cubes, cuboids, spheres, cones are all solids.
What this lesson covers
Try to break it
What if we squish the height to zero? It becomes a flat rectangle. A solid needs all three dimensions to occupy space!
How you build it
Build a solid box.
- Draw the front face of the box as a rectangle.
- Draw the back face the same size, shifted up and to the right.
- Connect the top-left front corner to the matching back corner.
- Connect the top-right front corner to its back corner.
- Connect the bottom-right front corner to its back corner.
- Connect the bottom-left front corner to its back corner to complete the box.
The proof, step by step
Prove that the object is a solid — it has length, breadth, and height.
- A solid occupies space.
- A solid has length, breadth, and height.
- A solid has a fixed shape.
Worked example
Which of the following best describes a solid?
A solid is a three-dimensional object that occupies space and has length, breadth, and height.
- An object with only length
- An object with length and breadth
- An object with length, breadth, and height — correct
- An object with no dimensions
