Selina ICSE: Refraction through a Lens

What this lesson covers

Why it matters

Sherlock's magnifier, a jeweller's loupe, your phone's macro attachment — all one convex lens, used in the ONE zone where it makes things bigger without flipping them.

The idea in plain words

Why the magnifier works. Tap the terms.

u < f → virtual, upright, magnified

f = 10 cm, object at 6 cm. Find the image.

Virtual, upright image 15 cm on the object's side, 2.5× larger

  • the condition: u < f — object inside the focus — the one zone where a convex lens cannot form a real image
  • image type: virtual — the image forms on the SAME side; you look THROUGH the lens at it
  • orientation: upright — no flip — unlike every real image a convex lens makes
  • the payoff: magnified — m = f/(f−u): the closer u creeps to f, the bigger it gets
  • 1/v = 1/10 + 1/(−6) → 1/v = −1/15 → v = −15 cm
  • m = v/u = (−15)/(−6) = 2.5

Predict first

To use a convex lens as a magnifying glass, the object must be placed…

Inside F the rays can't converge — they diverge, and your eye traces them back to a virtual, upright, ENLARGED image.

  • between the lens and F — correct
  • beyond 2F
  • exactly at F

What you do

Slide the ant closer and closer to the lens. Stop when the upright virtual image hits 3× — that's your pocket microscope.

Check yourself

The image in a magnifying glass cannot be caught on paper because…

Only real images (converging rays) expose a screen. The magnifier's image exists only for an eye looking through the lens.

To get MORE magnification from the same magnifier, move the object…

m = f/(f−u) blows up as u → f. Touching the lens (u → 0) gives m → 1: no magnification at all.

Which instrument uses a convex lens with the object inside F?

Camera: object beyond 2F. Projector: between F and 2F. Loupe/magnifier: inside F — three tools, one lens, three zones.

  • it is virtual — no rays actually meet there — correct
  • it is too bright
  • paper absorbs it
  • closer to F (but not past it) — correct
  • closer to the lens surface
  • further away
  • A jeweller's loupe — correct
  • A camera
  • A projector
