Why it matters

Every compass on Earth is answering a magnet the size of a planet. Bring your own bar magnet into the game, and somewhere the two fields call a perfect truce: a point where a compass simply gives up.

A bar magnet lies with N pointing geographic north. Where are the neutral points?

On the equatorial (east-west) line of the magnet — the textbook diagram

  • the background: earth's field — roughly a giant bar magnet tilted ~11° from the spin axis — the horizontal component swings compasses
  • the truce: neutral point — where a magnet's field exactly cancels the background (earth's, or another magnet's)
  • the insight: position logic — the point sits CLOSER to the weaker source — fields fall off with distance
  • Its field opposes earth's along the east-west line through the magnet's centre
  • Cancellation occurs at two symmetric points on that line

Predict first

At a NEUTRAL point, a compass needle…

Two fields, equal and opposite, sum to nothing. With no torque to obey, the needle rests wherever you leave it — the signature of a neutral point.

What you do

Slide the probe between the two magnets and find the truce line — then strengthen one magnet and find where the truce moves.
